Woah, a Nikon M. Camera history time: The Nikon M is an interesting evolutionary dead end for Nikon. First introduced in 1949 this camera was the next evolution of the Nikon I which had had a 24 x 32mm frame. This was known as the ‘Nippon format’ and was developed by Minolta to get more frames per roll. It was developed for the overseas market but never caught on as the US would not allow export because, ironically, of the non standard frame size. Oops. The M has a 24 x 34mm frame, which Nikon hoped would be more suitable for the overseas market, but they messed up again as by that time everyone wanted the standard 35mm format. By 1951 the M was obsolete with the arrival of the soon to be ubiquitous S series which set the standard for Nikon until the introduction of the F in 1959.
