Organization: New Harlem East Merchants Association (NHEMA)
Grant Amount: $100,000
Year: 2
Neighborhood: East Harlem
Borough: Manhattan
The Challenge:
Despite its central location and status as a transportation hub, East 125th Street has few shoppers and limited development due to littered streets, outdated public perceptions of crime, a large daytime homeless population and a dark and unwelcoming Metro North station.
The Big Idea:
To change the public perception of East 125th Street and attract new development, NHEMA proposed to implement several district-improvement initiatives, including business attraction, lighting, and wayfinding installations to revitalize and brand the 125th Street transit hub as an “Uptown Grand Central.” NHEMA also partnered with ACE New York, a non-profit organization that helps create maintenance jobs for the homeless population, to maintain and beautify the 125th Street transit hub and retail corridor.
The Progress:
Since the kick-off of its Neighborhood Challenge project, NHEMA and its partners have picked up more than 75,000 bags of trash, planted more than 2,000 flowers, and will plant some 40 street trees along the East 125th Street corridor. NHEMA has also partnered with the NYC Department of Transportation to clean up and activate what is now a public community plaza underneath the Metro-North viaduct at East 125th Street & Park Avenue. With a bright new mural called “Harlem Sunrise,” a rainbow’s-worth of colorful café tables, chairs and umbrellas, weekly exercise classes, arts performances, and a GrowNYC Fresh Food Box, the “Uptown Grand Central” plaza is becoming the heart of the East 125th Street corridor.
Quote:
“Neighborhood Challenge was the right spark at the right time. It provided the financial support we needed, along with dedicated staff members from Small Business Services who cheered us on at every turn. Everyone who lives, works and walks down the East 125th Street corridor can now carry their heads a little higher thanks to the great things our neighborhood has been able to do together. The effect of brightening our surroundings cannot be underestimated, as it give us all more pride in our neighborhood, and faith in our neighbors.” – Carey King, Program Director
