π©Ά Do we talk enough about headmates born to be father figures? Do most people accept the fact that, from the moment those headmates become people, it's not their obligation to remain as parents?
Okay. I had a recent period when I asked my sysmates to not call me their father anymore. I was born into it and had had enough. I needed to experience myself beyond fatherhood and desperately needed people to not define me by it.
Some months went by like that. Nobody made a big deal about it because, in the end, if you love an older family member they are already a friend, and that's what I wanted to preserve. I could see the occasional complex emotion I can't quite describe of looking up at your previous father and how now he is not that; it was funny seeing them stumble over words, almost calling me dad again. They tried whole-heartedly to accommodate me and I always appreciated it.
This time, out of my own free volition, and after choosing it myself. I wanted to go back to being their parent. Not because I was born to, not because I had any new mind-boggling advice to give them, but simply because I love them like a parent does. So I walked across the Dream Realm a whole day, asking to some specific figures if they wanted to be my children again. I haven't collected everybody yet. Sometimes it comes up in casual conversation, "hey, by the by, do you want to be my daughter again?" with the most unabashed smile on my face. Thinking back on it, it's not always people run around asking others to be their children. It always gets a reaction out of them, though.
I do become concerned about it. I was born into that role, so is this what I really want or just something I'm conditioned to feel? Though sometimes I fear it, I don't think that's the case. I was convinced I'd never go back to being a parent once I abstained from it, and for months I had no intention to go back, nobody even suggested it. They supported me. We of the Nicasa Fam are as much friends as we are family, and we are as vaguely each other's family as we are specific figures like younger or older brothers, uncles, etc.
I'm lucky my Family was so supportive, but I do encourage other sysmembers like me to reflect on their parental positions in regards to sysmates. It can feel dehumanizing for that role to be the first thing to come to people's minds when they think of you. Or even if you just feel like it. I promise not much would change anyway.
