Today's home archivist passion project: scanning four Newtype USA anime DVDs given to me by my close childhood friend (sadly I had disposed of my own small collection long ago).
Some of you may remember Newtype USA, which ceased publication in 2008. The Japanese version is still in publication, however, and some anime nerds still turn to Otaku USA (no relation, but similar in format) through subscriptions or the public library.
For those that aren't familiar, the magazine provided us with anime, manga and video game reviews, and came with an insert of several manga chapters, occasionally cool posters, and these DVDs which included several episodes of upcoming anime series, as well as previews for other anime and video games.
It's literally insane how much technology has progressed in the past 20 years, and now I can easily stream simulcasts of anime around the time they're airing in Japan (in high speed!). Back then, these DVDs, along with the slim pickings at my small town's Blockbuster and whatever was airing on Cartoon Network, were everything to us
