Tanya was turned ~1000 years ago by her great-aunt, Sasha. Sasha would go on to turn her sisters, Kate and Irina, and collectively they would come to be known as the Denali sisters.

Sasha was slain by the Volturi for creating an immortal child sometime after that, and the ensuing trauma from her death made Tanya a purist for vampire law. She will not tolerate breaking the Law, and will report any law-breaking in order to protect herself and her coven mates.

Through the ages, she’s taken many lovers in order to fill the void left by her maker, human and vampire alike. But on those occasions when her bloodlust would get the better of her and she killed her human lovers, she came to regret her reliance on human blood. When she found herself too lonely to give up her lovers, she took to drinking animal blood exclusively, and has been a vegetarian ever since.

Tanya loves to be loved, and she always follows her heart. She’s had her heart broken many times over the years, but she never lets that hold her back from falling in love again. 

More than anything, Tanya loves her coven mates. She would do anything for them, including killing or dying. She does try to avoid killing unnecessarily now, despite her bloody past. She carries a lot of regrets over the lovers she accidentally slayed, and would like to make up for it.

To that end, she likes meeting other vampires who are similarly tired of the bloodshed of their existence, and is happy to explain her way of life and help anyone who wishes to give up human blood to convert. 

Since she’s gone hundreds of years now without indulging in human blood, her resistance to temptation is quite strong, enabling her to form friendships and even romantic relationships with humans. Although she knows she can’t stay with them very long or reveal what she really is, she genuinely enjoys human company; they always manage to surprise her, which is rare, especially amongst others of her own kind.

Being over a thousand years old, Tanya has met many of the older vampires through the years. While she’s on good or at the very least civil terms with most of them, she’s a headstrong woman and it’s inevitable she’s butted heads with a few of them.

Despite being as old as she is, Tanya likes to live life in the moment. She’s spirited and always seeking out new experiences, and she’s not ready to let herself turn to stone anytime soon.

Tanya tends to be drawn to those humans who embrace life and live it fully, without inhibitions. She isn’t a reserved woman and she admires others who are similarly outgoing and free-spirited. She has never turned a human, though, and is unsure if she ever would.

In her millennium of life, she has never really been caught up in the conflict between the children of the moon and the vampires, so she doesn’t hate them on principle like some others. She is wary of them, and being that she strictly adheres to Volturi law, she would never knowingly consort with one, lest she face the justice of their law.
