This detail represents two proverbs:

1) “The Fox and the Stork or The Fox and the Crane dine together” which means “If you trick someone they might get back at you.”

2) The empty plate represents the proverb “What is the good of a beautiful plate when there is nothing on it?” meaning “Beauty does not make up for substance.”
