Role inversion in the 200 metres
Last year, Elaine Thompson saw her World Champion title denied in the final metres of the half-lap race.
The Dutch who had taken the Gold medal that night was also on the starting blocks yesterday and had the aim of repeating her victory.
Just like in Beijing, Dafne came to the straight considerably behind the Jamaican and started reducing the difference in this second half. However, that wasn't enough to avoid Thompson's victory by 0.1 seconds.
Summing up 2016 in what concerns the short sprints, Dafne and Thmpson have both entered three World Championships events: indoor 60 metres and outdoor 100/200 metres. All these three were won by Elaine Thompson, being Dafne the runner-up in the 60 and 200 metres. In the hectometre, the Dutch came only fifth.
The disappointment expressed by Dafne Schippers moments after the race might be contagious and let some of her supporters down. From an evolutionary point of view, however, the replacement of the 200-metres Champion is only a step towards a more active improvement in the strategy of these two 24-year-old women who still have some history to make throughout their careers, which have just started...
