the chrysalis; episode 03 - whiteboard city
RUNA
INT. LUKAâS ROOM â DAY
RUNA
Lukaâs room has always looked like that of the most diligent student. A dream come true for any teacherâstacks of books, everything neatly organized.
But today, it looks deranged, as if infected with some madness or obsession. The whiteboard above the desk is covered in a chaotic maze of notes and pictures.
The room feels uneasy, bombarding my senses with colors and shapes, flooding me with dizziness.
In contrast, Luka has a warm glow of excitement around him.
RUNA
âSo thatâs what youâve been doing all this time. Tracking a serial killer.â
LUKA
âWe both have. And weâve been on the trail for a long time. This is from our game.â
RUNA
As I step closer to the map, I recognize the shape. An old map of New York.
Yumeâs concept art is plastered all over it, surrounded by dozens of neatly written notes.
âI donât understand. Youâve skipped our meetings, but youâve been working on the game?â
His eyes light up with a strange smile. I am lost in the dissonance of the situationâeverything about it is fuzzy and unsettling, yet Luka radiates with yellow happiness.
LUKA
âIâve ventured into the unknown.â
âI had to take this journey all by myselfâbut now I bring you the boon to share. And our game will never be the same.â
RUNA
Itâs unsettling, to be honest.
He often talks like thisâlike some nineteenth-century gothic novel character.
Normally, Iâd joke about it, but Iâm in no mood for jokes today.
âYouâre freaking me out.â
When he turns towards the map, I swiftly peek into his bedside drawer.
A notebook, painkillers. No drugs in sight.
LUKA
âI might have been a little indisposed lately, but I assure you, I have paid due diligence to our project.â
RUNA
The moment he sits next to me, I study his face. His pupilsâare they wider than usual? Could just be the dim light.
I need to know for sure. I grab the bedside lamp and shine it straight into his eyes.
LUKA
âWhat on earth are you doing?!â
RUNA
He frowns, tries to pull away. I force his eyelids open. He lets me.
âBeing worried.â
His pupils shrink normally. I put the lamp down. One theory down.
LUKA
âI appreciate the concern, but Iâm not on substance of any kind.â
RUNA
âThen what are you on? Cause youâre clearly on something, Luka.â
LUKA
âWhat if I told you we could meet in a dream?â
RUNA
His voice turns seriousâand strangely inspired.
âAre you gonna offer me the red pill now?â
LUKA
âPerhaps I will do just that.â
RUNA
âSo what is this about?â
LUKA
âI think you need to see it for yourself. Have you ever had a lucid dream?â
RUNA
âYou mean when you know that youâre dreaming?â
LUKA
âAnd when you can actively create it. Make your thoughts reality. Spawn entire worlds.âÂ
RUNA
âOnce or twice.â
He pulls his phone and shows me an app. I read the name:
NEM
LUKA
âWhat I want you to do is quite simple. You download this app, you launch it. You play the recordingâyou need to use headphonesâand then you fall asleepâŚâ
RUNA
â...and then I dream?â
LUKA
âYes⌠and no. You need to see it for yourself. We should synchronize, though. Could you go through the procedure at 9 PM? Iâll meet you thereâŚâ RUNA
âItâs not possible.â
LUKA
âThen what time do youââ
RUNA
âItâs not possible to meet in dreams, Luka. Whatever youâve heardââ
LUKA
âI need you to forget what you know about the world, just for a moment. This software allows you to do more than just dreamâŚâ
RUNA
He points to the app on his phone.
LUKA
âIt synchronizes your brainwaves withââ
RUNA
âDonât pull this hippie pseudoscience on me.â
LUKA
âLook, Runa, just trust me, please?â
RUNA I nod. But I donât like where this is going.
LUKA
âYou launch the app. You play the recording. And then⌠wherever you are⌠you just need to find a way out.âÂ
RUNA
âIf you want me to even consider giving it a shot, you need to do better at explaining.âÂ
LUKA
âIn the dream, you need to find a way outside of wherever you are. Follow a road, go down the stairsâŚThe moment you begin looking for it, the path will unfold before you.â RUNA
âIf you say soâŚâ
LUKA
âOnce youâre out, youâll reach The Chrysalis. Thatâs where Iâll meet you.â
RUNAÂ
âChrysalisâŚ? Like⌠a moth cocoon?â
LUKA
âOr butterfly. Itâs a symbol. A threshold. Before the wings form. Youâre still sealed shut⌠but everythingâs already changing.â
RUNA
I donât like how calmly he says that.
LUKA
âLike the liminal space between reality and dream. Poetic, isnât it?â
RUNA
âThis is the dumbest thing Iâve ever heard from you.â
LUKA
âI know. But trust me. It will all fall into place once you get there.â
RUNA
Something is really wrong with Luka. Maybe he got into some cult? Perhaps thereâs only one way to find out.
LUKA
â9 PM. Be there.â
