Coffee in Hong Kong
Prices in Hong Kong vary from moderately more expensive (but no sales tax!) to outrageously expensive. The Hong Kong Dollar is pegged to the American dollar, so for a Canadian like me it feels like shopping in Seattle. Right now the exchange rate is about six Hong Kong dollars to one Canadian dollar.
I had a moment this morning when I realized that a grande drip coffee at Starbucks cost HKD26, or $4.33 Canadian, compared to about $2.30 back home. Fortunately, the HKU campus Starbucks provides a substantial student discount, so my cup was “only” HKD18.2, or $3.03 Canadian, which starts to feel a bit more reasonable.
The upside? Canadian Starbucks cards work in Hong Kong. :)
