Meet Music Writer and Record Junkie Oliver Wang at NextDayBetter + SF
Oliver Wang aka also known as âO-Dubâ is a music writer, scholar, and DJ based in Los Angeles, California. Since 1994, he has written on popular music, culture, race, and America for media outlets such as NPR, Vibe, Wax Poetics, Scratch, The Village Voice, SF Bay Guardian, and LA Weekly among many others.
Currently, Oliver is a professor in sociology at Long Beach State, and hosts the renowned audioblog soul-sides.com. Heâs the author of a new book, âLegions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco / Bay Areaâ which is creating quite the buzz among music lovers and scholars and has received positive press coverage from KQED, Vice, LA Weekly, and more. The book discusses how the Filipino community was influential in the Bay Area hip-hop scene, specifically with mobile DJ crews that emerged from the area. Wang chronicles this crucial era between the 1970s-90s that influenced a whole generation of young Filipino DJs, and spawned world champions such as: DJ QBert, Apollo, Mix Master Mike, DJ Shortkut, and so many more.
