You swore you were really trying. Truly, honestly, genuinely trying. But it was so gosh darn hard. You didn’t really understand why a single language needed three writing systems and why one of them was from a completely different country (damn you, kanji). Other than the fact that it seemed impossible to memorize all hundred plus characters and then make words out of these characters, it was also really fucking hard to focus. You see, because your Japanese was atrocious and you needed to pass the class, your teacher assigned you with a tutor. Out of all people you could have been paired up with, she had paired you up with Nakamoto Yuta, the school’s personal goofball, and (un)fortunately also your big, fat crush. Honestly, couldn’t you have been more cursed blessed? You knew you were a walking cliché: the wallflower liking the most popular boy. However, you didn’t necessarily think of yourself as a wallflower, you just didn’t really care about the dynamics of being involved with school and whatnot and you were a little shy, and that had given you a nickname. Sitting in your room with said crush was as excruciating as walking on hot pavement barefoot, especially because there was no way that you could act on your feelings and desires, seeing as Yuta would never in a million years be into you. (Or would he). What you weren’t aware of was the fact that dear Yuta’s sporting a bit of a crush on you as well. And he relished in the fact that you were very obvious about your feelings for him: stealing glances his way, blushing whenever he smiled at you, stuttering when he complemented you. He thought it was really cute. He clearly did everything in his power to elicit the reactions he wanted out of you. “Stop focusing on the kanji! It’s not that important right now, anyway.” Yuta told you, throwing the book you were studying from on the ground.
You gasped, exasperated. “Hey! That was expensive.” You mumbled, pouting. You wanted to push yourself off of your bed to retrieve the book, but was stopped by Yuta, who grabbed your wrist, effectively stopping you in your tracks, the book forgotten. “Sit down. You don’t need that book for now. I know you’ve been struggling with learning all hiragana and katakana characters, let’s start there.” You sat down again after Yuta had let go of your wrist. The boy smiled at you after you had let out a soft “okay”. “I know a video which teaches you all characters in the span of an hour, so I’d say we watch that and then I’ll test you on them. Sounds good?” Yuta asked you, grabbing his laptop from his backpack. He sat back against the headboard of his bed, patting the space next to him. After having a short internal battle with yourself about personal space, you sat down beside him, keeping your distance. “Sure.” You replied. You were a bit skeptical. If studying a language was that easy, you could’ve done it yourself. Yuta turned on his laptop, opening up a browser and searching for the video. “Just listen to the video.” He told you, placing the laptop in your lap. You hummed softly, doing what he had told you to do. After an hour or so the video ended. You had been so into it that you hadn’t realized Yuta had crept closer to you and his entire side was touching yours. You were also aware that you didn’t mind. At all. “Think you got all of them down?” The Japanese boy asked, breaking the silence. You looked up at him, wetting your lips before nodding your head. He smiled at you, picking up his notebook. “I’ll write down the katakana and hiragana characters, you tell me what they mean phonetically, alright?” Not waiting for your reaction, Yuta started writing down a few characters, starting with the easier ones, adding harder ones as he went on. Eventually, he had written down enough characters to test you on. “I’ll point to one, you give the sound.” Yuta said. “To make it more fun, though, because I acknowledge that this is very tedious, we get to do whatever you want after you get fifteen right consecutively.” The boy grinned at you. “Whatever, I just want to get this over with so we can start on actual words and sentences.” You pouted. He laughed, bumping your shoulders together. You couldn’t help but blush at the physical contact. You two did start on the actual testing, though. You got a few right but made a few mistakes every now and then, resulting in you not getting to fifteen. You let out a frustrated sigh after not getting to the end for the millionth time. “Last time and then I’m going home.” You announced, annoyed. Yuta hummed softly, also visibly frustrated. He was generally a patient person but even he was getting to his boiling point. Not because he was annoyed at you but because he didn’t want you to be irritated. Yuta wrote down fifteen new characters, letting you name them from top to bottom. Hope bubbling up in your stomach when you got them write, one after the other. Eventually, you did get all fifteen right. Both Yuta and you let out a small shout of celebration. You both got up on his bed, jumping around a little. Seeing as your life wasn’t cliché enough, you just happen to slip and fall of the bed, straight into Yuta’s arms. You looked up at the other, worried. You wanted to ask him if he was okay, but he sent you a small smile. Something in that smile told you not to say anything. You looked into the other’s eyes. “I do believe you are allowed to do whatever you want and I really hope you want to kiss me.” Yuta said boldly. You could feel your cheeks start to burn. You weren’t sure what to do, seeing as you didn’t think he’d like you as well, let alone want to kiss you. You didn’t want to make a fool out of yourself. “Because I really want to kiss you.” You felt your resolve disappear, pressing your lips into Yuta’s. This was what you wanted for months now and it felt so fucking good. You couldn’t believe how a simple kiss could be this amazing. You felt the other’s hands cupping your face, deepening the kiss ever so slightly. You let out a soft, happy sigh against the other’s lips. Ending the kiss with a few soft pecks, you pulled away. Your cheeks were burning with embarrassment. “You did so well, I think you need another treat.” Yuta said, smiling mischievously at you. You nearly choked on air. “Stop.” You mumbled, trying to hide yourself. He didn’t give you the chance to do so, pressing his lips against yours again. It’s safe to say that no learning took place the rest of your tutor session. At least, no language learning for that matter.
