The Conundrum of Capitalism and Public History: A View from the NCPH Working Group on Economic Justice and the Ethics of Public History (2018)
Musings on the ethics of public history from my colleagues and I.Â
Moving Forward
Though #NCPH2018 is over, our #wg2 is moving forward. I had a lively discussion with @raboyl and @1dan_ott about next steps.Â
First, we’ll definitely keep the conversation alive with blog posts, with a blurb in the NPCH newsletter, and with a History@Work post. We are also in conversation about a possible roundtable or special issue of The Public Historian.Â
Second, we want to round-up folks who are interested in pursuing possible action re: new public history economic models. In particular, Rachel has suggested a public history cooperative, and I have thrown out an idea about organizing (think SAG). So, if YOU want to get involved, let me know. Send me a note, a comment, a tweet. We’d love to hear from you.

Thanks to the hardworking faculty of the History Department, CCSU will be hosting the annual 2019 National Council on Public History (NCPH) Conference in Hartford....This event is not a typical academic conference, as it consists of workshops, round-table discussions, networking opportunities, as well as field trips to local historical sites. It serves as an opportunity for CCSU's Public History professors to update themselves on the latest research, while students can have the opportunity to learn and present projects. With the NCPH conference gathering attendees from all over the country, the History Department is hoping to attract national attention and out-of-state students to CCSU’s wonderful program. Â
A Social Media Story storified by Conductor_X
Storify of tweets from the final session (#s69) of #NCPH2016, dealing with the challenge of Confederate monuments for public historians. These reflect both the comments of the panelists and the views of the audience. The Twitter backchannel was (as you can see) very active, and often at odds with the panel itself.Â
Conferences
Later this month I’ll be in Boston for the MARACspring conference. I’m looking forward to it: the program looks good, it’s my first professional conference, and it’s the first time in a couple years I’ve felt comfortable scheduling a multi-day trip. As a bonus, I know a bunch of people in Boston, so I’ll get in some socialization as well as conferencing. I expect to crash pretty hard into…
