There's been any number of convention Barbies over the years, so naturally there's no end of things to share about them.
In 2003, the National Barbie Doll Collector's Convention was held in Florida, and the theme was "World of Barbie". This probably holds the record for most... absurdly broad theme. Everything within the world of Barbie was within range. Nothing was off-limits.
This stylish and sparkling Midge was a convention exclusive release; my biggest takeaway from this particular doll is that the fabric looks like exactly the same fabric as every one of my school dance costumes, with the sequins and all. Those aforementioned dance costumes were a little bit in the timeline before 2003, but still within approximately the right era.

There was also an even more limited variant of this doll - rather than for all convention attendees, the lady in the white dress was specifically for sponsors and chairpersons.
The back of the dolls featured a profile on the Western PA Doll Club.
You may notice in small font at the bottom of the box the reminder that the convention is not affiliated with Mattel; this comes as a surprise to many people, who have always assumed that Mattel was behind the convention. They're certainly willing to cooperate with it, but no, the NBDCC is not an official Mattel project.
I say this particularly because Mattel recently announced that they are starting their own official Barbie convention - the first to take place in 2026, also in Florida.
Barbie Dream Fest is being aggressively marketed as something new - and most of the feedback about it that I've seen has been genuine surprise that the long-running National Barbie Doll Collector's Convention wasn't already official and Mattel-affiliated, or expressing confusion about the need for Barbie Dream Fest when there are already Barbie conventions filling the market.
I suppose time will tell how this goes.
