Natural Methods for Making Your Hair Darker at Home
When we think of using natural products to colour our hair we automatically think of hair lighteners, but it is just as viable to use natural products to darken your hair too. Because you are using natural ingredients your hair will not suffer the effects of chemical treatments. Even better, they are really cheap and fun to do. Why not get some of your friends round and try the hair treatments together?
Using Coffee to Colour Hair
Coffee works really well as a hair colourant, plus as a treatment it smells pretty good too.
Make a pot of extra strong coffee and let it cool.
Pour the coffee into a jug.
Using the coffee wash your hair several times before giving it a final rinse.
Wash your hair as normal and condition.
This is a really quick and simple way of darkening your hair colour; the coffee actually stains your hair making it appear darker. Bear in mind that this is not going to be a drastic change, it will only take it down a few shades, it you want more colour repeat the treatment a few times. This method works best on medium and light brown hair.
Using Black Tea to Colour Hair
Similar to coffee the tea will also add colour to your hair through staining.
Perform steps as in coffee treatment, until the last rinse.
Instead of rinsing leave the tea on the hair for approximately 15 minutes, then rinse.
Shampoo and condition as usual.
This method is more of a wash in wash out treatment and can be repeated weekly if required.
Using Black Walnuts to Colour Hair
This is a really effective method for achieving a dark shade; it even works on blond hair.
Place into boiling water and boil until the colour has leached out of the nuts.
Leave it to cool before straining the liquid into a jug. (Throw the nuts away).
Apply the cooled liquid to your hair and leave for at least 30 minutes before rinsing.
Shampoo and condition hair as usual.
This is quite a messy method but it really does give good results.
Using Cocoa to Colour the Hair
Cocoa can also give a good colour, though you may smell like a chocolate bar for a while.
You need a half empty bottle of shampoo, add cocoa to the shampoo to fill the bottle.
Shake well to mix the contents together.
Use in place of your usual shampoo as often as you like.
Cocoa will gently and subtly turn your hair darker, giving the effect of low lights and bringing out all of the deeper colour tones in the hair. This method works best for those with light to mid brown hair, and it smells fantastic.
Any shade of hair can be darkened using mustard oil. However, it doesn’t smell very nice but it does work as a conditioner. To use it, just add the oil to the hair, comb through and leave overnight before washing out. The effects of mustard oil will appear gradually over time.
