Middle Earth: Pelorous River Region
I'm not quite sure what this is about, exactly, The Hobbit being filmed in Marlborough, perhaps?
The area is home to some of those gorgoeus long tailed bats, DOC are running a native bat recovery program in the region.
I hope Hobbits like bats.
Stewart Island: NZ's special place
For the beginning on Conservation Week, 1100 people were surveyed to decide on NZ's 'special place', with Stewart Island taking top spot with 20% of votes.
Kiwi and Pohutukawa were voted top native birds and plants respectively.
DOC's Deputy Director General for Policy, Doris Johnston, says, "it's great to know what New Zealanders think about it and it gives us a guide as to how best to manage the things that are important to them."
