Native dogs in Philippines are called Askal and many Filipino, especially those who are living in the city, are disregarding this breed. Some say Askals are dangerous and ugly and choose dogs with good breed and labeled themselves dog-lovers. How ironic, isn't? Last Sunday, I met this wonderful dog (Me and my friends named her Beybi Gurl), in our hike in Mt. Pinatubo, who guided us in our whole trek until the crater. It seemed the dog knew the trail well more than our human guide did. Not to underestimate our guide who kept his distance from us and was lost in our sight most of the time, this dog guide was real extrovert and enjoyed her time interacting with us. She led the trail quite accurately until we reached the peak (crater) - when we couldn't see our human guide. Now, now, what do you think? P.S We learned that dog-guides is a practice in Pinatubo using native dogs, the reason why we see so many dogs in jump off point/registraion office. How they were trained? We never know.
