Kainora AU Drabbles: Native AU part 2
Kai regained consciousness shortly after an hour had past. During that hour he was out, word had spread all throughout the camp about Jinora's outsider fiancé.
Kai had found himself laying under a teepee, with his good friend and mentor sipping tea next to him.
"I am glad to see you are awake. You must try the tea that the air nomads have made. It is delicious, and yet very light. I feel as if I am floating." Iroh said as he happily sipped more tea.
"What happened?" Kai asked as he started to stand up.
"You passed out just after the natives let us go. Though I believe a congratulations is in order." The old man said with a light laugh.
Kai quickly recalled the events, and was still very shocked to say the least.
"Wait, they can't be serious? Am I really going to be married? I am 17, I am not even a legal adult yet." Kai said as shock set in.
"That was back in republic city. According to the culture here, the marrying age is 16. By the standards of the air Nomads, you are engaged to the elders grand daughter." Iroh said as he put his tea down.
Kai felt the color drain from his face.
"But... but i have barely kissed a girl! I.. I can't be married off yet." Kai said horrified.
"Well, we could tell the natives that and have them throw us off the cliff like they planned to before." Iroh said with a serious tone.
Kai had forgotten that little tidbit of information. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place for sure.
"Oh relax my young pupil, at least you are to be married to a beautiful young woman. Not to mention she speaks english, so you won't have to constantly guess what she is trying to say." Iroh said trying to ease the young teen's stress.
"Yeah... I guess it could be worse. But, all the shock aside, I feel kind of bad. I mean, She could probably marry any guy she wants, and she becomes my fiancé to save our lives." Kai said as he lies back down on the ground.
"Your heart is in the right place, I am sure you will make a good husband for her, and a great father for your many children." Iroh said with a cheerful smile.
Kai's face went red at his mentor's mention of kids.
"Kids?" Kai managed to blurt out as his face turned red as a tomato.
"I can estimate a couple dozen based on the small tribe they have her, most likely to have more decedents." Iroh said in a way, that left Kai confused as to whether the old man was being serious or just messing with him.
But thankfully, the tattooed girl who had saved them earlier dropped by.
"Hello? Oh, it is good to see you are awake." The girl said with a light smile that left Kai looking away in shyness.
"Yeah... Thank you for saving us...." Kai said barely audible.
"Forgive him, he is very shy around beautiful women." Iroh says to ease the awkward.
Jinora blushed from the compliment.
"I see, well I hope that he could come and take a walk with me for a second." Jinora said as she twiddled her fingers together.
Iroh could see that the room was filled, with awkward teens who needed a little guidance.
"He would be delighted." Iroh said as he got up and moved Kai closer to her. "Go on and have fun you two."
The two left the old man to himself to go walk. Sure enough, the first 10 minutes of the walk was spent in complete silence, It didn't help that the native camp was staring at them. The two left the camp, which helped ease the tension and allowed them to actually start a conversation.
"So.. Jinora was it?" Kai asked nervously as he walked by her side. He could not wrap his head around how mindbogglingly beautiful she was and how she was now his fiancé.
"Yes?" Jinora answered as she awaited his words.
"Why did you saves us back there?" Kai said, happy to finally get that out of his throat.
"I honestly don't know, I guess it was because you didn't seem like bad people." Jinora stated rather collected. The native girl gave an aura of calm and light air about her, it kind of amazed Kai.
"While I am very thankful for that, why would you..." Kai tried to finish the statement, but couldn't get the words out.
"Have you become my fiancé in order to do it? It was the only way to save you, but that doesn't make it any less easier on you." Jinora said with a hint of worry.
"What do you mean by that?" Kai asked with worry dripping from his voice.
"You are going to be tested to see if you are worthy to be my fiancé." Jinora explained, "Which is probably even more deadly than being thrown off the side of a cliff."
Kai felt his jaw hang open. Jinora realized her words were horrifying.
"But don't worry, the testing won't happen for at least a few months. Since you aren't from here, you will be allowed to stay and learn our culture." Jinora said, speaking quickly, hoping that getting out those words would make the testing seem more humane.
Kai seemed to have calmed down.
"Oh, well, I guess it could be a lot worse." Kai said as he tried to joke about it.
"Though, I guess since I am going to be your fiancé. I should at least get to know about you more." Kai said a lot more relaxed than he had been the whole day. "So how do you know english?"
"Missionarys are constantly coming here, my family had picked up the language from the constant visits, as well as a few other nomads." Jinora revealed as she also felt more at ease.
"I see, thats pretty interesting. What about those tattoos. The ones that you and your father had, the bald tattooed guy is your dad, right?" Kai questioned.
"Yes, he is my dad. As for the tattoos, these tattoos are given to masters of martial arts and those who have achieved a great connection with the spirits. Very few ever get their tattoos. I was the youngest to ever get my tattoos." Jinora said as she pointed to the tattoos on her head and arms.
"Wow, you are even more impressive than I thought." Kai said with a goofy smile.
"Enough about me, what about your culture? The missionaries that come here usually focus on their beliefs rather than culture." Jinora said as she explained her curiosity.
"Well... I don't know where to start. I could start with city life." Kai said as he scratched his head.
Jinora's eyes lit up like stars.
"Tell me about this City life." Jinora said, looking at him with extreme interested.
The next few hours were spent with Kai explaining about his life, and answering Jinora's questions and vise versa. Not realizing how close they were becoming in the process.
