It's #NationalLibrariesWeek and one of the hashtags floating around this week is #MyLibraryMyStory. Growing up as a kid I never really used libraries. Living where I did, there was a substantial fee to join the nearest town's library, and it was an inconvenience to get there and use it, so that was something we didn't do. In college, I never took advantage of the school's or the town's library, though I really regret it. Sure, I was busy, but, oh! the materials I could have had access to! Instead, my library story begins at a small rural library as a desperate for work adult, and a wonderful, open-minded library director who encouraged me to keep applying for work at the library, even though I wasn't always the best fit for positions. Eventually, I was brought on as a substitute, despite my lack of overall library experience. I worked as hard as I could, and got more hours and a position created just for me - marketing assistant. I love my job. I love my coworkers and my community. My life has been changed by this library. I was losing hope of ever being employed but now I have the ability to bring pretty much all of my interests to work and have them be relevant. I am passionate about the institution of libraries and the services they can provide both communities and individuals, especially those who may not otherwise have access. My library saves lives, even if just mine, and my library is always ready to welcome everyone with a smile and a laugh and an offer to help.
