A Comparative Analysis between "Nathan Smith" & "Natewantstobattle"
[NOTE: This is just me practicing my literary analysis skills on Nateās songs. Art is subjective and all up to interpretation; none of this should be treated as fact.]
Listening to Nateās earliest original songs (which most fans donāt know) is a bittersweet experience. You can clearly hear how different the tone and genre is between his current songs and his old ones.
His early original songs sound light and hopeful, all full of prospect about what awaits in the future. Itās most evident in his song āWingsā where he sings about his goal of making the world know his name and his belief that he has the potential to achieve it, as evidenced by the lines āit could take weeks, even years, all the same / but I know, I got what it takesā.
However, if you compare that to his current original songs (most especially his new album Sandcastle Kingdoms), you will be able to tell how dulled and jaded he is now after years of pursuing his goal. Although he is now closer to his dream more than ever, I think itās sad to see that wide-eyed, hopeful Nate turn into a self-deprecating man.
In āWingsā he talked about moving out of his parentsā house and pursuing his plans. In his new song āBrandedā, he then talks about how California āincineratedā who he is and how money and fame changed him.
Looking back is also a recurring theme both in Nateās old and new songs. Again, in āWingsā, he sings about how itās been a year yet he still havenāt looked back, still chasing the dream. In āBrandedā, the line āa map that only shows me where I am, not where Iāve beenā again points about him not being able to look back (or being capable, but choosing not to).
Furthermore, the ābirdyā he sings about in āWingsā can be a symbol of the mature version of him; the āmanā version of Nate. Birds are often used as reference to the male sex organ, a symbol of masculinity. In the song, this ābirdyā tells him to pack his bags and head out; an act commonly done in Western culture when entering adulthood (or at least, maturity). Nate may have also felt imprisoned or limited when he was still in his parentsā house, as evidenced by the birdyās line about Nate needing room to spread his wings, which he references again in āWe are Ignitedā.
āIād Love to Break It to Youā is pretty self-explanatory. He sings this self-deprecating song about how no oneās there for him. The line ābut give it time, weāll all forget your faceā says a lot about him. Itās a powerful and edgy song, but it becomes sad the moment you take a closer look at the lyrics.
āWe are Ignitedā is another interesting case, because the first few lines of the song (āYou found a way out of this place / Itās a permanent escapeā) can be interpreted as a reference to suicidal thoughts; a sign that Nate may have suffered in mental health disorders before (or still suffering, who knows?). The āmedicationsā he talks about in the song solidifies this theory. The line āyou're just a kid who lost their own wayā also tells a lot on its own. Additionally, he sings about losing his mind in āBrandedā while in āStopRewindā, he sings about him being the bait and the predator, his mind.
Also, in Nateās gameplay of āThe Beginnerās Guideā, he admits that the allusions, references, and symbolisms about negativities and mental disorders resonate with him a lot, and āhits way too close to homeā.
Speaking of āStopRewindā, the first few verses of that song talks about Nate following someone elseās footprints and trying to figure out what he was supposed to find. This reveals the possibility of him having a low sense of identity. He sees himself as a story ānot worth the readingā.
āSandcastle Kingdomsā, on the other hand, requires a more in-depth approach. The ācastles of sandā may symbolize his perception of his fanbase; it can easily crumble anytime as the tides go by. Like āBrandedā, this song calls to attention the imagery of his mirror showing someone he doesnāt know. The song also describes his āsubjectsā blindly following their ākingā to uncertain doom, and how his rule will then decide where to hang his āhideā,Ā probably alluding to his disposability as an artist.
The only āhappyā or hopeful songs in the new album are probably āTo the Ends of the Earthā and āLive Long Enough to Become the Heroā. āHeroes Never Dieā, on the other hand, is more of a power song.
Nateās current style is amazing; donāt get me wrong. I FREAKING LOVE HIS NEW SONGS. Iām not asking him to come back to making vanilla songs of hope. I just think itās interesting to study how the evolution of his music style can give us a glimpse of his evolution as a person.
But hey, thatās just my theory based on my observations of his songs.
Just a little Nathan Sharp appreciation post

The Search for Nate's Old Original Songs
We (probably) all know of Nate's old song "Here Right Now" already. If you're lucky, you must also know of "Wings" which is another one of his old songs. These are just some of his original songs before Nate Smith became NateWantsToBattle. I only know three of them as of the moment: the two mentioned above (which I both have copies of) and an elusive third one titled "Be Alright." There might be a lot more than just the three but for now, that's all I know. If you Google "natewantstobattle be alright", you'll see that one of the results is a post in 2012 from Nate's Facebook page announcing the release of his new original song "Be Alright" on iTunes. I don't have an iTunes, so go check it out and see if it's still there. You see, I'm getting desperate in searching for Nate's old songs because they really tell a lot about his growth as a person and a musician. So if anyone out there has a copy of "Be Alright" or knows how to get one (along with his other old songs), please let me know. I already have two. And I still want to uncover more. Please help me in this endeavor. Thank you in advance.
Just wanna leave this here...because I can...and it's srsly such a good cover
