God it's really pissing me off that the Naruto Manga just doesn't make sense anymore. Some chapters are fine and then others are rushed and the transitions just seem to jump from one thing to the other abruptly leaving me confused. Sometimes I feel like I skipped a page or a bit of dialogue or something
look at the sage using a sword and staff to battle the juubi
So I'm thinking madara found the sword (that could be in this pic?) and hid the staff, so obito wouldn't notice and ask about it.
Take a look at the sage's staff, it has six loops. Six is a common. Plot twist the staff is the secret sixth tool that the sage possessed. ANd it is the most fearsome, so fearsome that he didn't pass it down to either son.
EDIT: The sword and staff probably go together. Together they could be all powerful. It'd be smart to separate the two, hoping they'd never be used.
