played some of an old linux game game i liked as a kid, xsoldier. it's mostly not very tough but the last few stages are really mean due to extremely hard to see gray bullets, i die to the final boss here. since it has no audio i included some of my own music for funsies
i think the charm point with the super metroid samus ending scene is the completely blank expression. like she really is giving this energy of "oh, yeah, thanks for the help i guess. well, cya"
off she goes
part 1: my tabletop dm sent me one of his favorite shitpost tracks and somehow i actually think it was an incredible lead-in on the title screen. already we begin me experiencing emotions they haven't named yet
i think this bit is the most artificial in the story, i'm still not sure how to feel about it. adam tells you to go to sector 5 to use the data room to get power bombs. but there's a data room on the main deck.
a few theories about this situation. one is that it's strange on purpose. ADAM is lying to you hal 2010 style all game, so its actions are a little weird at times. it's possible the data was already sent and has to be targeted to individual data rooms, but maybe also the ringleaders want you to stay out of the base's central bridge after seeing the reactor event
the reason i think it might be on purpose odd is that right after that, and the sa-x trying to trap you, adam's next briefing is very short. Go back to your ship. I need to speak with you.
this is the set-up for the elevator power outage. incredible scene. but an interesting one still. was the idea that after the reactor incident they were like, the x are very interesting, but willing to destroy the entire base to stop her. we should get samus to leave temporary while we research this, tell her to go back? is it a conflicting order? is it meant to bee arbitrary?
im really into the reverse course, where they've clearly been developing technology they were sending to you even beyond what you're told about, but then they're forced to re-examine everything after discovering the x are without a doubt completely intelligent beings. honestly if you think about it, it's actually totally logical for the federation to like. go. maybe we can communicate with them and should try a diplomatic approach, honestly, right? it's not what their doing, of course, but it would make a sort of sense. i think there's room for much intrigue here
like, what if half the ppl involved think bsl is a totally aboveground research facility? before they were all in agreement that helping samus was important, b/c both the ringleaders and the others want to keep their important specimens safe. but this adds enough mystery that they stop to debate...

even just in that scene there's so much going on... the sa-x slow walk is really interesting b/c samus runs literally everywhere, she has shit to solve. meanwhile the x are almost infuriatingly casual. it's hard to read the vibes of the placid walk + wall nuke combination... the fact that the door would open if they shot it but instead they missile it to tear the entire room open really creates this feeling of a being with no concerns at all. it makes tactical sense of course, the sa-x has been clearing pathways for its brethren this whole time. but it FEELS careless
i've mentioned that i think the x had to ship of theseus back a brain and probably threw in all sorts of wrong parts from other organisms they ate. and they aren't likely used to human intelligence brains yet. as such i imagine rn they're still getting used to, like, thinking individually. their motions are a bit robotic, a bit alive, but ultimately, very precise at this point. they are acting on a sort of perfected instinct... for now. a fun capstone on the "how did they make it to srx? it's likely someone's helping them move around... but how..." i've seen that suit before.
the first boss! arachnus-x! one of my favorite first bosses ever somehow. obv we have the metroid fusion mood focus with the long build-up in the room itself. but it's also just a lovely spread of capabilities for a first boss even if it's rather easy when you're used to the controls
the original arachnus was a silly guy you faced in metroid 2 pretending to be an item sphere. the x are supposed to take the genes of organisms they devour and make improved battle forms based on them, so this one possesses increased capabilities compared to the natural one.
the crux of the fight is shifting back and forth over the boss as it corners you. it's hard to safely jump over it, so you're encouraged to use the ledge mechanic. when it sees you clinging it tries to knock you off the wall, making it safe to jump. simple but cute
minutiae
1. you can't simply wail on it, the back is resistant and it only turns around to attack
2. they get to have fun with gba sprite rotation! look at that beautiful spin!!! isn't it awesome!!!
3. the boss entryway forces you to ledgegrab in case you haven't noticed you can yet
this is also our first meeting with a core x, an amalgamation of the parasites. all the bosses eventually return to their core form and desperately try to crush you with their cell wall. there's something beautiful here, seeing what's clearly their natural last defense against their main predator
it's not stated yet, but the way the xs gather together before manifesting into a chosen battle form is a strong hint of intelligence to me. the x are whispering to one another. you have interrupted their conspiratorial meeting, they take this form to collaborate against you!
i also just really love the music, and that they make you fight an arachnus to get the morph ball. will never get tired of samus eating a monster and gaining a power conceptually similar to it
so in great greed the princesses are named after sweets like princess candy and princess cup cake but im so fucked up because im compared the scripts as i play and i couldn't figure out why the princess's name was Eina
but i realized seeing her full name and was like... wait.. Eina Vitamiina of the Vitamiina kingdom... her sisters... it can't be... i had to go check. what was the second princess's name going to be. it can't be that she's Aena. and then we're going to meet Biina and Cena, right...
so i get to where she explains who ill meet in the next kingdom
"Eena is there" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
