#nano panic

Wasn’t sure I was going to use this blog this year - and, ideally, I’d like to use it year round - but I have a lot of NaNo feels and have to have somewhere to put them.

I’m not ready. Like I’m the least ready I’ve ever been for a NaNo and that is saying something. And, also, this year I wanted to put pressure on myself to write all original work, or at least a majority of it, but I just don’t think that’s possible with how damn unprepared I am. 

I do have like two and a half novels planned out, I just have to start them and then go from there - not overly planned, though the first one is pretty damn planned I just DONT FEEL PREPARED. 

A week ago I was in California at LeakyCon and I’ve been home for a week - and the plan was the clean and prep and try and finish The Way of Kings reread. But I just... I couldn’t, I was so exhausted from just going and going during Leaky and then ahhh chronic fatigue. 

I will be writing about foxes 

I am so torn about whether to refer to them as foxes or kitsune. Because I'm playing with Japanese mythology here, but I hate hate hate using foreign words when the word exists in the language you're writing in. And kitsune just means fox. 

no, seriously. Japanese mythology treats foxes as inherently supernatural. Any fox that lives a long life becomes wise and gains supernatural powers. Nine tailed foxes have lived for 900 years. 

Yako, also read as nogitsune, means wild fox (or field fox). They're trickier and more malicious than their zenko (lit. good fox) cousins. Foxes are considered the messengers for the major spirit/god Inari. 

It is believed that a child born from a fox and a human will have some supernatural powers as well. Several figures in Japanese history were said to be sons of foxes. 

My nano story is about a pair of twins, May and Eri, whose mother is a nine-tailed fox that relocated to Los Angeles to serve as a link between the Japanese immigrants and Inari. Their mother's fox bead is stolen by a man possessed by the archangel Uriel, who was banished by Michael for interfering with humans. He intends to use the powers of supernatural creatures to destroy the barrier around him. Without her fox bead, May and Eri's mother will slowly die. May has rejected everything supernatural about herself and hasn't spoken to Eri in 6 years, but they have to work together to save their mother and possibly the world.
