Cryptid of the Day: Nandi Bear
Description: In East African folklore, the Nandi people tell tales of a massive bear/hyena simply called the Nandi Bear. It is said to scalp people, and the legends were first brought to the West by Charles William Hobley in 1913. Sighting was reported throughout the 19th century and early 20th century, having decreased over time.
The hyper-aggressive Nandi bear, named after western Kenya's Nandi County that contains the once-contiguous Nandi and Kakamega Forests around where it has been most frequently reported, is undoubtedly one of Africa's most intriguing albeit infamous cryptids. It also has a string of native names, of which the most familiar are the chemosit and kerit. Moreover, a wide range of identities has been offered for this ferocious mystery mammal down through the years.

#15 - Nandi bear
The Nandi bear, also known as Chemosit, Kerit, and Ngoloko among other names, is a ferocious carnivore said to live in the highlands of western Kenya. It is described as being a shaggy-haired, powerfully built animal with high shoulders and a sloping back, reminiscent of a hyena, and is apparently able to stand on its hind legs. Local stories about the Nandi bear say it hunts by night and preys upon both humans and animals, but that it only eats their brains.
The Nandi Bear is a cryptid purported to live in East Africa. It is said to resemble a hyena moreso than a bear, standing at least four feet tall with a sloping back. It is said to be a vicious predator, with one popular rumour claiming that it will eat the brains of its victims.
Its name comes from the Nandi people of western Kenya, where most reports of the creature come from. It is known locally as the Chemisit, Ngoloko or Duba.

Frank W. Lane wrote: “What the Abominable Snowman is to Asia, or the great Sea Serpent is to the oceans, the Nani Bear is to Africa.”
It has been suggested that the Nandi Bear is a surviving pachycrocuta brevirostris, a hyena-like animal that became extinct roughly 500,000 years ago.
