Book 13 of my 42 book goal of the year and my third piece of fiction in a row. Liberation by Imogen Kealey is a lovely piece of historical fiction. My favorite part was the ending historical notes when the authors discuss what was fact and what was indeed fiction. Also the recommended reading about the main character Nancy Wake who the Germans in WWII dubbed âThe White Mouseâ. Bet you don't know the full story of Nancy Wake, aka - HÊlène, aka - AndrÊe, aka - White Mouse. When you got these many aka's you know there's going to be a heck of a story here. Born in NZ in 1912, before immigrating to Australia, she ran away from home at age 16, moving to New York, then London, then Paris and finally Marseilles when the war broke out. It was during the war where she transformed into a French resistance (maquis) leader. Initially assisting with escaping allied airmen into Spain, she herself would be force to escape as the Gestapo hunted her. Escaping to England, she was trained by the SOE where she was described as a 'crack shot' and sent back via parachute to France. It was here where the secret agent stuff kicked in. Leading close to 7000 men, her behind the lines work caused major havoc for the Germans, who sent a small army to destroy them. Russell Brandon's Book is the first narrative published on these exploits and believe me it is an amazing read. Not to give any more away about the story of Nancy Wake... but will finish with a field report from her chief instructor describing her as "a real Australian bombshell. Tremendous vitality, flashing eyes. Everything she did, she did well."
