Introductions first: for anyone who doesn't know, who are you / where are you from?
Hey, I’m Enrico, I’m 23 and I live in a small town near Venice, Italy.
What music did you grow up listening to?
Bobby Valentino, Linkin Park, Kap Bambino, Shiina Ringo.
My first experiences with your music came through your edits of Mistress, Beat Gatherer's Pope and then the Mr. Mitch edit that dropped on Mixpak's 2016 Holiday Bundle - so I've got a couple of questions around those to start. Where do you typically start when it comes to editing a track? How do you decide what tracks you want to edit?
It’s very random actually, sometimes I just add drums to change the vibe of a song that I like and make it fit to the genres I usually play in my sets. Other times I take a small part of a song and make it totally different. I usually choose tracks from artists I like and that would sound good in my imagination with a dembow vibe for example, but sometimes the result is really bad when you put the idea on ableton, so you never know.
How did the Mixpak feature come about?
The Large from Mixpak liked some of my edits I uploaded on my soundcloud page and asked me if I wanted to send a track to be featured on the holiday bundle. Obviously I said yes and I sent her the The Man Waits edit.
Your mix for Noisey Italia back in October is stacked with Baile Funk, Dembow, Kizomba, and other African diasporic and South American styles. As you're from and based in Italy, how do you reconcile your position as a geographical outsider to many of the scenes that this music is developing out of with an obvious love and interest in exploring and featuring those styles in your edits and DJ mixes?
When it comes to these genres, that have a solid cultural background, the key is to recognize your position as an outsider if you live in Italy like me for example. Since I was a kid, I always liked to let my friend listen to music I discovered by myself and share together the interest for a certain band/ artist. This is what I’m doing now or at least trying to do now with my mixes/edit. First time I listened to a baile funk track, I was so excited listening to all the weird structure/sounds/melody that make baile funk so unique. Same thing for afro house. I was so excited when I made the the mix for Classical Trax (which is full of baile funk/ afro tracks) because I discovered so many unbelievably good tracks and I couldn’t wait to share them with everyone.
I don’t consider myself a dembow/baile funk producer/DJ, I just like to support the music and be influenced by it as I do with all the music I listen to.
Again, I think the key is to recognize where you come from while paying the right respect to a certain culture and get in touch with it, through readings for example, as much as possible.
How much do you rely on an Internet community or music scene for what you might be traditionally fostering locally?
The internet helped me so much with this project and through communities like Classical Trax I’ve been able to share my tracks with people that would listen to them. I receive support from people that are miles away from where I live and that’s really exciting to me and it keeps me going.
What other influences and interests do you have beyond strictly music?
I studied Japanese for a long time and also lived Tokyo for an year and an half. Living there had a huge impact on me and on the way I view music and art in general. I’d also like to get more into graphics but I think it will take some time ahah.
A bit about the mix... where and how did you record it? Did you set out with a specific idea when selecting the tracks?
I recorded it in my bedroom with Traktor, I gathered some tracks from artists I like lately and mixed them together. I like mixes that contains all different sounds so I tried to put together everything from experimental to more danceable genres.
What do you have planned for 2017?
Got some gigs planned outside Italy and I’m really excited about those. Also going to release some originals soon and I’m working on an EP right now.
If you had to pick something for people to listen to immediately after this mix what would it be?
This track is so well produced and the use of vocaloid here is amazing.
