After leaving Iran and going to Turkey where he studied briefly, Nader Khalili hitchhiked across Europe and eventually took a student boat from Roterdam to the United States. He arrived with a couple of shirts, $65, and a Persian-English dictionary. #naderkhalili #calearth

In 1975, Nader Khalili closed his successful architecture practice in the U.S. and Iran designing high-rise buildings, and journeyed by motorcycle for five years through the Iranian deserts while developing his Earth Architecture prototypes. In 1980-1981 his team constructed and fires a ten-classroom school in Javadabad village, near Varamin, in Iran. The school is still in use (swipe for more photos). #naderkhalili #calearth
