I’m up in #nabesna #alaska to celebrate the extraordinary life my grandma, Lorene Ellis, lived. She hunted and trapped animals to survive and keep her family nourished during harsh winters... all with her hair done and lipstick on point. Any visitor down the 40-mile rough-and-tumble dirt road was offered food, shelter and friendly conversation. Pie and tea, a seat by the wood stove. Her love is my family’s bedrock. Her acceptance of her children for who they were never wavered. She was forever an optimist, ‘it’ll get better soon;’ and she understood that that attitude, and hard work, was what it took to survive and thrive. Over 80 people made their way down the road to remember her. The permafrost below us is further away from our feet now. It's melting, displacing soil and trees and people. Walking this land, season after season, you notice the small changes telling you of bigger ones taking place. And then the big changes, like glaciers creeping back into their mountains and a fall season that became an actual season after lifetimes of birch trees just shrugging golden for a week, those big changes gain an uncomfortable potency. Don't tell me climate change isn't real. And don't tell me we can't do something about it. My hometown of #Anchorage joined the #compactofmayors to do its part in reducing greenhouse emissions and find solutions.
