for day 1 of Nabari Appreciation Days (@nabaridays)! I wanted to draw at least one thing to celebrate the 15th anniversary of my favorite manga, Nabari no Ou. It is such an important and influential manga to me and I can’t even begin to describe how much I love Yoite...

Nabari no Ou is the love of my life and my reason to wake up every morning. Seriously though, I’ve been thinking hard for almost a month and made several attempts to write this prompt. In the end, I chose to go with:

Cathartic experience. That’s what NnO was for me when I first read it, a deeply moving story that shook me to the core. Of course, due to its great storytelling and very human characters, but also because emotions are a core concept in this manga. The protagonist’s defining trait is indifference. At first, Miharu seems composed and cool (and a bit bland compared to the usual shounen lead), but as the plot moves on, his defensive nonchalance starts to crumble. Then we can see the real, vulnerable Miharu, who faces the circumstances and his own feelings.

Emotional intelligence is a skill that requires work and courage. I didn’t realize it myself, but when I first read Nabari, I was quite incapable of dealing with my own emotions. Sometimes they seemed to come and go without a reason at all, sometimes it was like I couldn’t feel anything at all. In a sense, somewhat similar to Miharu. I was seeking models of human relationships in the safe environment of fictional stories. When reading Nabari, I thought it was relatable because of the gay existential plot. And it was, but deep down I craved for that emotional liberation and maturity that not only Miharu but other characters experience at different points in the story. By reading this manga, I could love and grief deeply, and that is a precious experience I will not forget.

What is Nabari Appreciation Days?

Nabari days is a two-week-long event to celebrate the series Nabari no Ou as we approach the series’ 15th anniversary on the final day of the event! There will be various ways to participate in the event, with hopefully a little bit of everything for everyone. You can read over the participation guidelines here.

How do the prompts work?

Theme days are every 3 days to allow some extra time for creators to make their works, since daily prompts can be pretty draining. In total, there will be 6 of these theme days over the course of the event. You can consider these the main prompt days, with the prompts in-between being fillers for the time until the next one.

On theme days you’ll see multiple prompts for to cover for both fanworks and blog posts/asks -- don’t worry, you aren’t expected to attempt all of them! And if there are other things related to the theme you want to talk about / make something based on too, go for it!

Filler prompts are daily and include blog post ideas and general questions that can also be filled by sending in asks if you want. These are intended to be simpler for in-between days. All days are optional, but if you feel like attempting "all" days, you can consider these the optionalest? the optional of the optional? (lol)

If you’re writing blog posts or sending in asks, don’t feel obligated to have to write long posts -- a name, a few words, or a single sentence does the trick too!

These prompts are just in place for those who like having them to work with, but you don’t need to do them if you have something else you’d rather do or say! As long as it’s Nabari, we’d love to see it!

first up is favorites, which in this case is favorite characters. kouichi and shijima basically tie for that title for me, so it’s a good thing they show up a lot together lol
