N7829B on short final at Phoenix Sky Harbor.⠀ ⠀ The new Southwest colors were unveiled at Dallas Love Field on 9 September 2014. Officially the colors are known as “Bold Blue”, “Warm Red”, “Sunrise Yellow” and “Summit Silver” as the accent color. The font is known as “Southwest Sans”. The new look was unveiled just five weeks before the expiration of the Wright Amendment that had long limited nonstop flights out of DAL.⠀ ⠀ I started flying Southwest regularly when I was in college in the early 1990s. I still remember when the Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program was called the Company Club, it was based on legs flown. With the Wright Amendment in full force, I’d rack up free flights easily which was as good as gold. There was no such thing as online booking. You called up the airline and booked a flight over the phone- but if you told the agent on the other end of the line you want ed to fly from Dallas to anywhere else outside of the Wright Amendment perimeter, they’d apologize and tell you that they don’t fly that route.⠀ ⠀ However, if you wanted to get around the Wright Amendment, the conversation would go something like this:⠀ ⠀ “Yeah, I’d like to book a flight on Southwest from Dallas Love Field to Baltimore-Washington and I already know about the Wright Amendment restrictions.”⠀ ⠀ “Oh, okay, you must be one of our regulars out of Love Field! So you know already I’ll have to set you up for two separate flights with a change over in an adjacent state then, right?”⠀ ⠀ We called it the Southwest Shuffle and we did it with a smile! OKC was my most common shuffle point to collect my luggage and check it in again, long before through ticketing and check in were permitted! Now it’s time for an AvGeek School of Knowledge lesson in aerodynamics. ⠀ ⠀ Note the blended winglet and how it “seems” just a bit off angle in relationship to the lower wing surface. Part of this is due to the supercritical airfoil section of the 737NG’s wing, but the winglets on the NGs are also toed out. ⠀ ⠀ Winglets have two primary angles- the obvious one is the cant angle- how far off vertical is the winglet canted. The less obvious one is the toe angle- how far off the direction of travel is winglet angled. On the 737NG, the winglet is toed out 2 degrees. ⠀ ⠀ The primary reason is to reduce wing bending- keep in mind a winglet acts like a wingspan extension. With the winglet at zero degrees toe angle, the 737NG’s wing would need more structural reinforcement as the winglet would be exerting an upward force (lift) that wants to bend the wings further. By toeing the winglet out 2 degrees, a slight downforce is created which reduced wing bending (thereby making extensive structural reinforcement of the outer wings unnecessary) without sacrificing the attenuation of the drag-inducing wingtip vortex. ⠀ ⠀ During the development of the blended winglet, it was found that the 2 degree toe out also helped reduce other forms of drag but it did result in an increase in induced drag- that’s the form of drag that results from the wing changing the direction of airflow as it hits it. Obviously a zero degree toe angle had the least amount of induced drag. ⠀ ⠀ However, the tradeoff was deemed acceptable given the decrease in wing bending as well as the decrease in other forms of drag like trim drag (the drag from keeping the aircraft trimmed in level flight) and wave drag (the drag from transonic shock waves). ⠀ ⠀ Take notes!
