Iâve had too much fun and feel guilty so hereâs a...
The fact that youâve gotta defend yourself on these fire-ass posts youâve had since That Post is kind of unreal to me still tbh
Oh Iâve been apologizing for having opinions LONG before That Fucking Post came around. Iâve actually been slacking on it in my old age recently because every year I get more cantankerous and crusty.
But, like... while a part of me - the cantankerous part - thinks that this should be unnecessary, that people (myself and others included) should be allowed to state their likes and dislikes regarding trivial subjects like pop culture without having to put a fucking disclaimer on them, I also know that hearing someone elseâs differing opinion does provoke an emotional reaction whether it should or not. If you love something, it does hurt to hear someone list its faults. If you dislike something, it is irritating to see it praised. We donât choose to have these reactions, and we canât choose not to have them. Emotions donât listen to reason - theyâre instinctive, an unavoidable reaction.
So, while I get annoyed when someone bursts into one of my opinion posts and tries to turn it into a debate when I just wanted to state my stance on my own damn blog, I get it. Hell, Iâve been the fucker who bursts onto other peopleâs harmless opinion posts before. I try not to be that fucker anymore, but itâs happened before and it will probably happen again. No one can completely control their feelings, and no one is beyond slipping up and doing something stupid because of their passions. Itâs part of being human.
So, like... yeah, I donât feel I should HAVE to do a disclaimer, but I also think itâs ultimately smart to do it anyway. Itâs not my responsibility to manage othersâ feelings, but if I act like my best self and do my best to manage them, it avoids some of the nastiness that ensues. And I canât blame people for getting defensive of the characters they love - I get defensive of the ones I love too.
Plus, if I issue the disclaimer and someone still gets on my case for bad superhero positions or whatever, my conscience can rest easy knowing that they were the asshole first, and sometimes little petty shit like that is what letâs you sleep at night, yâknow?
