What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea.

I am a sucker for angst, and boy does this have plenty in it.  This fic wins the awards for making-me-cry-the-most, making-me-tear-up-just-thinking-about-it-two-days-after-finishing-it, as well as making-me-hold-back-tears-when-I-made-the-mistake-of-eating-at-a-old-fashioned-diner-while-listening-to-Elvis.  There are good times in it though, great times, amazing love.  It is beautifully written and needs to not only be a book, but also a movie.

It’s a good read not only for character development, the fact that it’s a love story that will make you cry for several reasons, but also that it deals with an era in US history that was extremely hard for the LGBTQ community.

Castiel is a wayward son too, and we have had the privilege to see him carry on for ten years now.

To Castiel, who’s gone through so much, accomplished many feats, and continues to learn and grow everyday. There aren’t enough words to describe how much this nerdy little angel, this bamf, this member of Team Free Will, and wayward son means to me.

To Misha Collins, for Castiel and Supernatural would not be the same without. He is the reason why Supernatural is still going strong, why Castiel can have ten years instead of three episodes. There is also not enough words to describe how good of an actor, activist, and overall human being this man is and how much of an inspiration he is to me.

Happy ten years of Castiel, everyone.
