My Star Trek Story
Everyone has a story about how they got into a thing. Some of them are long and complicated, others are quite simple. The story of how I got into Star Trek is one of those simple stories but I've always thought it was cute. My mother and her younger brother were all life long Sci-fi geeks. They read books and comics and watched movies in the genre and that was sort of what was around while I was growing up. The year I turned four something big happened; Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. My mother would watch it every week. I don't know how much she enjoyed it (The first two seasons of the show are a bit dire) but she was faithful in her viewing. One evening, I happened to be in her room while she was watching the show. I was doing some sort of four year old thing (probably talking) when I looked up and I saw Beverly Crusher's hair. And my life read changed. So in that way that only a small child can, I fixated on her hair (What a pretty color, my child self thought). And since she had pretty hair, she was obviously a good guy and worth watching. So, I owe the next 27 years of fandom to a childish fascination with redheads (which persists but, I feel I am a bit subtler now).
