Today, I couldn’t decide what to read for my daily devotions, so I asked God to take me to the passage I needed to hear. He took me to Matthew 6:19-34, which is about wealth and covetousness. 

I was hardly surprised; I’ve been struggling with greed ever since the quarantine began. I’ve spent a lot of money on things I want, not things I need. I also have been obsessing over my weight, which is taking time away from God and is fueled by anxiety. 

Here are some verses that really spoke to me today:

20-21: “...lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

25: “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

33-34: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Jesus isn’t saying that God will give us what we want, rather He will give us what we need as long as we continue to seek Him. Sometimes we may need bread for our body, and sometimes we may need bread for our soul. Not all of God’s provisions are material in nature. 

This passage also speaks indirectly to anxiety, which is my biggest obstacle. Worrying about what is to come will do nothing for us. We must rest our fears of  tomorrow on God, because He will provide.

...It was like God was hammering this passage into my head. Not only did I turn right to Matthew 6, but when I glanced at the music I randomly chose to listen to during my devotional, this was on the screen: 

I went to my favorite middle eastern market today so ofc I made sure to give an offering to Apollo.

For the past couple of days I’ve been pondering the nature of Jesus. I’m pretty sure any Christian has done so at some point. While it’s still a complicated subject, God led me to the first two chapters of Hebrews for some clarification.

The book of Hebrews is addressed to believers (likely Jewish) who were ready to revert back to their old ways (aka. before they became Christian). The author argues against this. Chapters one and two describe how Christ is above the angels and is an “expressed image” of God. Unlike us humans who are made in the image or likeness of God, Christ is the glory of God made visible to man. 

(2:17-18) “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”
