I heard the mailman approach my office door, half an hour later than usual. He didn’t sound right. His footsteps fell more heavily, jauntily, and he whistled. A new guy. He whistled his way to my office door, then fell silent for a moment. Then he laughed.

Then he knocked.

Today I had to make the hardest, most painful and selfless decision I’ve ever had to do and it’s left me broken.

Coco fought against so much over the past year and was doing well until her cancer returned and spread. It was time.

I’ll never forget the day I got her. My mom excitedly presented a smushy faced puppy no bigger than my palm to me and my first words were “What is this?”

It was an unexpected surprise, one no other could ever surpass.

Over the years Coco brought so much love and joy into my life from attempting to fold laundry as she played with my socks to me finding cookies hidden under my pillow because she buried them to save for later.

All the oinky sounds she made, and waking me from a deep sleep with the loudest snores I’ve ever heard, to when I woke up feeling wet around my shoulder and wondering why I was sweating so much. Ahh wait, that wasn’t sweat, it was her peeing in the bed! It’s fine. In fact I would give anything to wake up in a puddle of her pee again if it meant she was here with me.

I’ve spent the last 15 years giving Coco all the love I had to give and more and life will never be the same without her.

When I think back to my first words I now have the answer, this is the companion you’ll have through good times and bad, who will love you unconditionally, who can’t wait for when you come home grabbing a toy in their mouth to bring you and then not dropping it because they are so excited they don’t know what to do!

Coco fell asleep in my arms, comforted by the sound of my voice and gentle kisses.

“Stay with me butterfly” - is what I imagine she would say
