Repost @greggtendwa its remarkable what is currently happening in the Kenyan Arts & Culture scene. This month, 2 (very voluminous) books have been released - #ShadesOfBenga by ketebul music, and #VisualVoices by Footprints Press. Music and Visual Arts, respectively. Its impressive that both books are authored (or executively-produced if you like) by Kenyans, Tabu Osusa and Susan Wakhungu-Githuku, respectively. Anyone working in the cultural and creative sector in the East Africa knows how hard it is to find authentic literature about the sector that is written by the natives, for the natives about the natives. Seems like we are finally telling native stories, and validating the perspectives of natives. We are elevating indigenous knowledge and practice, breaking away from a disoriented past where definition has had to always be, external.
