Ukuphumula ngokuthula, Albert Lutuli. Â The first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize (and first recipient from somewhere other than Europe or the Americas), Lutuli was a staunch anti-apartheid leader and elected president of the African National Congress (in which role, he met with Senator RFK during his visit to South Africa in 1966). Â Mvumbi died on this date in 1967 at the age of 69 (or thereabouts), long before apartheid was finally dismantled in 1991.
