MuslimARC’s #BeingBlackAndMuslim Twitter Townhall aims to amplify the voices from the diversity of Black Muslim identities. This includes African Muslims, Afro Caribbean identities, Afro Latino, Afro-Canadian, and Black American Muslims.  In discussions about Muslims and Islam, African Muslims are often left out of the conversation. Islam is the largest religion Africa. Africa consists of fifty four countries, each with culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse communities.  We also hope to explore the tensions and connections between African Muslim Diasporic communities in North America, whether model minority narratives, marginalization of refugees, the undocumented, and indigent Black Muslims,  as well as challenge colorism and internalized anti-Black and anti-African sentiment.  Drawing on the themes of Black Muslim Future and Afro-futurism, we are looking forward to imagine new possibilities for African Muslim Diasporic identities.

‪#‎FlintWaterCrisis‬: Flint residents are being forced to drink and pay for lead-laden water. For two years, this toxic water has been the only option for many of Flint's residents. No medicine can treat the irreversible brain damage that has been inflicted upon every single child in Flint. Trying to provide enough water bottles for the city would require 20 million bottles of water per day for the next year until this problem is solved.

Some steps forward:

1. State of Michigan needs to change all lead pipes; 2. President Obama should declare Flint a disaster zone to allow long term federal assistance; 3. State of Michigan must deliver two 55-gallon drums to every home in Flint and each day replenish them with fresh clean water. Until the government does its job right, the relief organizations should follow this model replacing water bottle supply.

It's back! Join MuslimARC for the 3rd annual #BeingBlackAndMuslim. This year's Twitter Townhall will focus on the idea of a vibrant Black Muslim Future.

Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative supports the #Muslims4Flint campaign, which seeks to provide immediate relief to Flint residents and raise awareness. MuslimARC, as an organization committed to racial justice, notes the deadly consequences of environmental racism, which disproportionately affects communities of color and lower income residents. John Eligon writes:

For civil rights advocates, the health crisis in Flint smacks of what has become known as environmental racism. Coined in the 1980s, the term refers to the disproportionate exposure of blacks to polluted air, water and soil. It is considered the result of poverty and segregation that has relegated many blacks and other racial minorities to some of the most industrialized or dilapidated environments.

Drawing on their faith principles and commitment to addressing community concerns, Michigan Muslims have taken initiative to provide relief. The coalition explains: 

Flint, Michigan is a small city where residents have been denied clean water for almost 2 years due to short sighted and egregious actions taken by their government. The Michigan Muslim Community Council is partnering with Islamic Relief USA, Life for Relief and Development, local Flint nonprofits, including the MADE Institute, the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village, the Grand Blanc Muslim Youth Association and others to purchase clean water and distribute them to local residents. Our goal is to work with a broad coalition of community activists and faith based groups. The local state government is providing free filters and their residents are supposed to get assistance with their utility costs.

Access to clean water is a basic human need which the people of Flint do not have. Our American values simply do not allow us to ignore the plight of our fellow neighbors. In Islam, providing water is one of the highest forms of charity. As Americans, we simply cannot allow the people of Flint to be without one of the basic necessities for life.
