on a warm night in april of 1992, will has fifty bucks to spare and a free night. he decides to go to broadway, to see a new show. he sees a poster, prominently featuring the art of keith haring, an artist he greatly admires, so he purchases one ticket to falsettos by william finn.
and in the theater, he breaks.
on a warm night in july of 1992, mike visits will in new york city, and will asks him to come to a broadway show. mike feels his gut lurch at the thought, and he pushes back, saying he doesn’t like musicals. will asks him why? is it because they’re too gay? mike says no, but he privately wonders if that is why he rejected the idea so quickly. so he says yes, to prove will wrong. he sees that the musical is called falsettos on the matinee, and he feels that same twist in his stomach, but he doesn’t say anything, because he’s not homophobic. as song after song plays out before his eyes, mike can feel pieces of himself cracking and coming loose. he rants and raves at intermission about the complex melodies of the songs.
and after intermission, he breaks.
