Louvre Closed for Reform

Louvre staff are blocking tourists from entering, closing the museum as a part of the wave of French protests against government pension reform. In March, the French government forced a bill through Parliament without a vote, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 years old. The expansion of the Louvre under Napoleon III in the 1850s, known at the time and until the 1980s as the Nouveau Louvre or Louvre de Napoléon III, was an iconic project of the Second French Empire and a centerpiece of its ambitious transformation of Paris. Its design was initially produced by Louis Visconti and, after Visconti's death in late 1853, modified and executed by Hector Lefuel.

Lefuel created two octagonal gardens at the center of the Cour Napoléon (now replaced by the Louvre Pyramid)

The origins of the name "Louvre" are somewhat disputed. According to the authoritative Grand Larousse encyclopédique, the name derives from an association with wolf hunting den (via Latin: lupus, lower Empire: lupara). Turris lupara. Also there are theories of the origins linking to the words L’ouvre, or l’oeuvre or lauer or lower means "watchtower", from the Saxons language.

In the 7th century, Burgundofara (also known as Saint Fare), abbess in Meaux, is said to have gifted part of her "Villa called Luvra situated in the region of Paris" to a monastery, even though it is doubtful that this land corresponded exactly to the present site of the Louvre.
