āI donāt think you want to do that.ā The calm, clear, deep voice of Sebastian Shaw was not raised, but, as was typical, filled the room. Or was it a dark alley? The man who currently believed that a dozen knives were being plunged into him from assailants on all sides thought so. But Sebastian Shaw knew better, as did the woman he was addressing.Ā āAt the least, I donāt want you to. Because, as you know, the penalty for killing a human is the Pit. And as a Council member, Iād be duty-bound to report this. You could kill me now, of course, but we both know that will only buy you a bit of time. And your powers donāt extend to erasing what Iāve seen.ā Shaw doubted that Regan would be glad to see him. Both because he had caught her in this act, and because when she had failed him, heād left her to her fate. He had no remorse for it, and was not about to make apologies; he wasnāt a man with any sympathy for failure, and heād never pretended to be.Ā But despite Reganās failure at reprogramming Tessa, her illusionary abilities were still superb, and rumor had it that sheād only improved since heād employed her. That sort of skill could only be found elsewhere in extremely skilled telepaths, and none of those were people he wanted to work with. It was doubtful to him, of course, that Regan would wish to work with him again---people had a tendency to take things so personally---so heād decided that coming in with a bit of leverage against her would be wise.Ā Heād put some people on the job of intel-gathering, and, what do you know---Regan, true to form, was being a very bad girl. As the Madripoor mob boss currentlyĀ ābleedingā on the absurdly expensive carpet before them could have testified, if heād been aware they were there. āNot to worry, though. You havenāt killed him yet. So Iām not duty-bound to report this---or anything. Make Mr. Huang here believe an ambulance has arrived in the nick of time to save his life, and then get him out of the room. I have an offer to discuss with you in return for my silence, and I think this is just the place.ā It was a palatial room of crimson and gold in one of the skyrise penthouses in Madripoorās High Town, playground of the islandās uber-wealthy elite. āEven if itās a bit plain.ā
