In the past year my thoughts have shifted from “I should only ever get hardback and physically read every book I consume” to “Audiobooks are fine. If I really like the book I can get a hardback copy later.” I do think there’s a certain magic to reading a physical copy of a book. You have to devote time to keep your eyes and hands engaged, cutting yourself off from everything else. I still enjoy that immersion, but it does limit my reading time to the extra time that I don’t often have. So I came to a compromise: I will introduce myself to a book through its audiobook form and if I like it it’s considered “Hardback Worthy” and I buy a hardback copy to read when I have that precious extra time. These books have joined that “Hardback Worthy” category. For those of you who do not know, I am more than likely autistic and didn’t realized that until about six or seven years ago. When I read books like the Murderbot Diaries, I feel as if I’m seeing a portrayal of how my mind works and how it affects my day to day life. Struggling with talking to people, being in crowds, questioning what my face is doing and wishing I could hide it, having a goal in mind and pushing everything towards that goal… the list goes on.
