Anatoly Onoprienko (1959-2013)
Anatoly Onoprienko, also known as the Beast of Ukraine, the Terminator or Citizen O, was a Ukrainian serial killer who confessed to killing 52 people following his April 16, 1996 arrest. He was born in Lasky, Zhytomyr Oblast on July 25, 1959, the youngest of 2 sons – his brother, Valentin, was 13 years older. His father Yuri was decorated for bravery during WWII. When Anatoly was 4 years old, his mother died and he was cared for by his grandparents and aunt for a while before being given to an orphanage in Privitnoe. Onoprienko would later say that he resented the fact that his father got rid of him, while his brother continued to stay in the family home. In one interview Onoprienko alleged that it was this that predetermined his destiny to become a killer, and also remarked that 70% of those brought up in orphanages end up in prison as adults. When he was finally arrested by police, Onoprienko was in possession of 122 items, including a sawed-off TOZ-34 shotgun, a number of other weapons he had used in several of the killings and a number of items that had been taken from victims. Whilst in custody he initially confessed to 8 killings between 1989 and 1995. He denied any other charges at first, but eventually confessed to killing 52 victims in a 6 year period. He claimed that he killed in response to commands from voices in his head.
In 1989 a family of 10 was killed during a robbery when they interrupted their intruder. Onoprienko confessed that he and an accomplice (Sergei Rogozin) committed the murders using weapons that they carried for self-defence. He also said that he cut off all contact with Rogozin following this incident. The victims were 2 adults and their 8 children. The same year, 5 people, including an 11-year-old boy, were shot whilst sleeping in a car – their bodies were then burned. Onoprienko confessed, saying these murders were unintentional and that he only planned to burglarise the car. On December 24, 1995, the 4 person Zaichenko family were killed with a sawed-off double-barrelled shotgun during a robbery in their home in Garmarnia. The home was set alight afterwards. On January 2, 1996, a family of 4 were shot and killed – the murders were quickly followed up with the murder of a male pedestrian whom Onoprienko stated was killed out of necessity in order to eliminate a potential witness. On January 6, 1996, Onoprienko is alleged to have killed 4 people in 3 separate incidents on the Berdyansk-Dnieprovs’k highway by stopping cars and killing the drivers. The victims were Kasai, a Navy ensign; Savitsky, a taxi driver; Kochergina, a kolkhoz cook; and an unidentified victim. on January 17, 1996, the 5-member Pilat family were shot and killed in their home, which was then set alight. 2 potential witnesses were then murdered – a 27-year-old railroad worker named Kondzela and a 56-year-old pedestrian named Zakharko. On January 30, 1996, Marusina, her 2 sons, and a 32-year-old visitor named Zagranichniy were shot dead in the Fastiv area. On February 19, 1996, the Dubchak family were killed in their home in Olevsk. Onoprienko said he shot and killed the father and son, bludgeoned the mother to death with a hammer and demanded money from the daughter before bludgeoning her when she refused. On February 27, 1996, the Bodnarchuk family was killed in their home in Malina. Onoprienko claims he shot the parents and then hacked the daughters (7 and 8 years old) to death with an axe. 1 hour later, Onoprienko allegedly shot and killed a neighbouring businessman named Tsalk who was wandering around the Bodnarchuk property, hacking his corpse with an axe. On March 22, 1996, the 4 person Novosad family were Onoprienko’s last known victims. He shot and killed all of the family members and set their home on fire to eliminate any evidence. All of these killings followed a pattern: He chose an isolated home and created a distraction to get the attention of the occupants. He would then kill all occupants, usually starting with the adult male, before finding and killing the spouse, then the children. He would then often set the homes ablaze in an attempt to cover his tracks. He would also readily kill any witnesses unlucky enough to cross his path.
In March 1996, the Security Service of Ukraine and Public Prosecutor’s Office specialists held 26-year-old Yury Mozola as a suspect in several of the murders. Over a 3 day period, six members of the Security Service of Ukraine and one representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office tortured Mozola, burning, beating and shocking him with electricity. He refused to confess to crimes he was adamant he didn’t commit and died during the torture. 7 responsible for this death were sentenced to prison terms. 17 days later, the true killer, Anatoly Onoprienko, was found as the result of a massive manhunt – 7 years after his first murder. This happened after he moved in with a relative and his stash of weapons was discovered. Onoprienko was kicked out of the house and informed on – days later, he was captured. Onoprienko managed to escape the death penalty and was sentenced to life imprisonment – in 1995 Ukraine had entered the Council of Europe, so at that time it was trying to abolish the death penalty. Onoprienko died of heart failure in Zhytomyr prison on August 27, 2013 – he was 54 years old.
Also known as the Good Hart murders, the Robison family murders were the mass murders of Richard Robison, his wife Shirley and their four children; Ritchie, Gary, Randy and Susan in 1968. The family was shot and killed while vacationing in their Lake Michigan home. The bodies of the Robison’s lay dead for almost a month before they were discovered, leaving police with little forensic evidence to work with in order to find their killer. All six members of the family had been shot using two different weapons and two family members, Richard Robison and his young daughter Susan, had also been beaten with a heavy blunt object, most likely a hammer. A shattered front window suggested the first shots may have been fired from outside of the cabin before the gunman came in to finish the job.
Joseph Scolaro, known as Joe, worked with Richard Robison. He was a staff member who police discovered had been embezzling money from the magazine and his boss during the time the family were on holiday. Police thought Robison had found out about the fraud and betrayal in a phone call while they were at the cabin.
Evidence found multiple phone calls between Robison and Scolaro on the morning of the murders. Their theory was that Scolaro had driven out to the cabin and killed the family before Robison could take action about his embezzlement. It is believed from the time of the last phone call between the two, Scolaro had enough time to drive from Detroit to Good Hart and carry out the murders. He did not have a solid alibi for that time period to account for his movements.
The case remains open to this day, although locals still believe that Scolaro was responsible.
What is your relationship with Murdoc?
’s complicated.we’re friends sometimes and other times he kinda steps all over me, literally, i mean, i used to like him, sometimes i still do and we can have a good time but then i remember all the shit he’s done. But, i’m working towards understanding him more, and him understanding me more, i’ve said this before but, i’ve seen his softer side, he told me about his past and all the bad things that have happened to him as a kid over a bowl of strawberries, he was wasted though, i don’t know how much he can remember from that night.but it’s like, relationships are like a dance yeah?moving with each other and understanding that there are going to be a couple stepped on toes in the process but still continuing on, the beat keeps going and you just keep moving laughing over the mistakes of the past because you’ve accepted them and moved on.
With Murdoc it’s like crashing into each other and then getting flustered on the dance floor and stopping, sitting down for a bit then getting dragged back onto the floor because your favorite song comes on, and you can make it through together but right once the beat changes your shoulders keep getting each other you go for a spin and dip and drop them on the floor, and you could be better if you took a couple dance lessons maybe but you think you got it because you’ve managed to dance pretty well sometimes especially in the past and you’re both trying to get back to those days but accidents have happened and your feet don’t move the same way anymore,
and the times at the table with drinks get longer but you make eye contact when your songs come on and it’s like “you wanna dance?” but both of you know someone is just gonna get hurt so you hesitate from trying, and your friends stopped trying to get you on the floor too, and so now we’re just two blokes at a table, a song that used to mean so much to us playing, and both of us don’t want to mention it.
but we’re getting to a point where we dance in private y'know? not yet ready for the floor but when that song plays it’s just us, and it’s a new song, the ones from the past have been played out and it’s not who we are anymore, ye we still step on toes sometimes or accidentally elbow each other but it’s progress, it’s something
can’t master a dance in one day, and can’t master a waltz alone.
