synopsis: julien has a big surprise for soft!gf (and it’s not the vegan mac n cheese)
G’s notes: um hi… sorry i disappeared… goin thru A LOT of life changes and i’ve been so disconnected from the fandom but i miss you all and i love you all and if you will allow me back into ur hearts i am here on my knees asking for forgiveness (🧎♀️➡️ this is me, see?)
warnings: RPF, talks of marriage, surprises, no physical descriptors? i think, AFAB reader
G’s 2nd note: y’all i am RUST-EEEE, this is NAWT proofread and idk how many words it is let me cook ok
There wasn’t too much to complain about, sitting across a wooden picnic table under the warm nashville sun, a delicious array of vegan and vegetarian barbecue lays on two trays between you and Julien, a non-alcoholic IPA in a pre-chilled glass is held by Julien’s tattooed hand, your own holding a slightly-too-sweet fruity lemonade.
“Did you try this?” Julien murmurs chewing her bite, taking some of the slow cooked pulled mushrooms on her fork, holding it out for you.
“Not yet,” you hum, taking the fork gently between your lips. Instantly a smoky and sweet, but still savory sauce hits your tongue, eyebrows lifting in surprise. “Holy shit,” you gasp softly.
“Insane right?” Julien giggles, feeding you another bite, pleasantly surprised with the new plant based spot in Nashville.
So much has changed since you both moved to L.A.— it was a fresh start, that was definitely needed, but coming back to Tennessee, together, more grown up, more thoughtful, feels like coming home but with control—something your both grateful for.
“Should I look at which hiking trails are open?” you ponder to Julien, slipping a carrot to Beans under the table; she relishes in the shade, an ice water bowl next to her paws, as she accepts the carrot gratefully, your knuckles rubbing her big head.
Julien nods, shrugging her shoulders, a flash of nervousness flickers over her eyes causing you to scrunch your own. “What’s wrong?” you ask, eyeing her suspiciously.
“Nothing…just nervous to try the vegan mac… that’s all,” she responds, smiling prettily as she pulls the cardboard tray closer to her, digging her spoon in.
You huff slightly, laughing as you open your phone, looking at some of the new things that have popped up since you moved, but also seeing if Julien’s favorite trails are open, the tiny musician across from you itching to take Beans up on a hike.
Julien fidgets a bit, watching you grow more immersed in your phone, ignoring every alarm bell in her head that’s going off as you break the sacred mealtime rule: no phones, but right now she can’t help but be grateful for the small piece of technology in your palm. One hand lifts her IPA, sipping gently as her other palms the velvet box in her pocket. She’d seen exactly one tik tok (sent to her by Kelli) where one partner just nonchalantly slides the ring over the table and that was the proposal. She decided that in an effort to respect your wishes of a small, intimate proposal, this was the best option.
That didn’t mean she wasn’t fucking nervous though. Luc and Phoebe had given her a pep talk, she’d talk to your best friend, she knew that the ring she had designed and made was your dream ring. She knew that. You lived together, you’ve moved across the country, you’ve done countless tours and miles and miles of distance and yet, Julien was scared shitless.
She keeps the one hand in her pocket, the other picking at her food in front of her, building you a bite. She lopsidedly smiles, watching as she puts the spoon near your mouth, your eyes glued to the phone but accepting the food, cheeks full and eyes bright.
She waits. And waits. And waits.
Finally your phone adjusts in your hand, your opposite reaching for your fork, stabbing at some coleslaw before eyes drift back to your phone as she moves her palm, grabbing the box and sliding it across the picnic table.
You look up from your phone, smiling at her, looking at the box, then your phone, then back at your food before—
You do a full double take, looking at the velvet box and then back up at Julien. Eyes wide, lips parted, watching Juliens nervous smile turn into a cocky smirk as she gently lifts some beans into her mouth.
“Is that—?” you mumble. Julien nods, flicking her head gently, coaxing you to open it.
You drop the fork, and the phone, hands shakily opening the box.
Not just any ring, it’s the ring. Your ring. Julien did perfectly. The band color, the finish, the cut of the gem, the small details and engraving in the band. Down to the shimmer of the gem in the center, it’s perfect.
Tears fill your eyes, slipping the ring on. Julien’s smirk softens, looking at you with wonder and excitement. Seeing you accept the ring, accept her, accept the proposal, her body heats up from the inside out.
“Did you try the cornbread yet?” she asks innocently.
You can’t help but stare, lips parted, unbelieving of her nonchalance.
“There’s honey butter…” she smiles cheekily.
G’s third note: i love these tik toks, also im so rusty so this prolly sucks okay? i love u all mwah xoxo
Maybe like a fic where you and Julien like agreed to keep it casual but like both of you want it to mean more

You’re sitting around Lucy’s round dinner table, plates dirty but yet to be cleaned up. The table is filled with friends, clockwise it goes: Lucy, Naomi, you, Katie, Jo, Phoebe, and Julien. Across you was Julien, who was sipping on her lemonade. Your eyes couldn’t help but linger on her, even when she wasn’t speaking. You knew it was wrong, she wasn’t yours, you weren’t hers. But your heart was confused, and you always did want what you couldn’t have.
The conversation around you was lively, you could distinctly hear Phoebe’s howls over a joke Katie told. But you honestly couldn’t be bothered to listen. Your mind replays a moment you and Julien shared earlier in the day.
It had been early, the clock read 6:00 A.M. as you turned to the left side of the bed. Face to face with the woman who kept your heart pumping. You smiled at her as she lifted a hand to your face. You felt sparks fly as her gentle fingers brushed over your cheek. “Good morning darling,” she spoke, hand moving across your waist, pulling your body into hers.
“‘Morning Jules,” you yawned. “How’d you sleep?”
She smiled lazily, rubbing circles onto your hips “Good, especially since you were here.”
Her comment struck you wrong, reminded you that this was all a charade, that it meant nothing to her (or so you thought) “Don’t.”
Julien furrowed her brow, “Don’t what?”
You started to pull from her “Jules c’mon! Don’t say stuff like that!”
“What do you mean?”
You sighed frustratedly, “Like couplely stuff!” You threw your hands in the air, then fell back down to the bed with a slap, “We’re not together, you make that abundantly clear when we’re with our friends!” Julien’s face dropped at that, your words hurt for a reason you didn’t know yet.
“(Y/N) wait!” Julien went to grab your arms as you slid out of bed.
“Julien, please don’t. Just let me leave. It's nice until morning right?” You sigh, tired of this constant pain of never being feeling like you were enough.
You began to get up to collect your things and leave while Julien did nothing to stop you. You walked to where your jacket sat on the back of a chair, and pulled on your Converse. You located your phone and key. You were ready to walk out the door until you heard your name.
You turned around to spot Julien making her way to you. “Wait, just a minute, please?” Her eyes pleading. You gave in, just standing in her presence waiting for her to do something- do anything. You had spent months waiting for her to do something, something to convince you that these feelings you held for her were okay, that maybe they could be reciprocated.
Julien simply stood, staring into your eyes, as if taking in every engravement in your irises, surely she had to have seen the way your pupils dilated around her? How your cheeks flushed at the mention of her name. She leaned in, hand on your cheek and pulled you in for a kiss. It left you breathless and when you pulled away you immediately left.
Your mind was warped with questions.
Your mind was full of questions, memories of Julien’s hands on you, the way her lips felt-
You finally came back to reality after you felt Phoebe kicking your leg under the table. “Earth to (Y/N)?”
You shook your head, turning to face the platinum blond “Hmm?”
“Thought we lost you there for a few minutes,” Phoebe playful punched your shoulder. As you glanced around the table you realized everyone was staring at you. Your cheeks flushed as you grabbed your drink, sticking the straw in your mouth and chewing slightly. You noticed Julien staring at you, her eyebrow turned upwards.
“What were you thinking about babe?” Katie asked, smiling at you.
You started to reply, “Nothing-”
Until you were cut off by Phoebe again, “OMG!!! Or who were you thinking about!”
With that, your eyes widened and you furiously shook your head, “Nobody! I was just zoning out!”
Lucy chimed in, “Honey, we all see the way you’ve been glowing recently!! Did you find someone?”
Jo interjected, “You have to tell us who's the lucky lady!”
“There’s no lucky lady! I just zoned out!” You looked across the table, unimpressed looks were on everyone’s faces, except Julien's. She stared at you again, like she had in the morning. Only this time it seemed like she wasn’t trying to read it, more like she was understanding you. You could tell when her brows unfurrowed and she tilted her head at you.
“Whatever you say,” Phoebe sighed. Then leaning towards you she whispered “I will find this person.” then she plastered the sweetest smile on her face.
You jokingly rolled your eyes at her before saying “Whatever you say Pheebs!” Once the normal conversation started up again you stood up, grabbed your plate, and walked around the table into the kitchen. You stood at the sink, rinsing the plates off with hot water.
You heard footsteps approach you from behind and say a plate placed on the counter next to the sink. You recognized the hand immediately and in an instant, you turned around, face to face with Julien. It seemed today that her thing was to stare at you in silence because for a minute no words were exchanged between the two of you.
Finally, after minutes of hesitation, you spoke, “Julien-”
“(Y/N)-” Julien had had the same idea as you. She motioned for you to continue speaking so speak is what you did.
“Julien, I don’t think I can keep doing this with you.”
The tattooed woman had not expected that from you, her face contorted into a look that you could only describe as horror as she frantically asked “What? Why? What-what do you mean?”
You sighed, “I can’t keep sneaking around with you, I can’t keep pretending that I don’t-” You trailed off, nervous to tell her how you truly felt.
“‘-That you don’t?” Julien asked, wanting to hear your full truth.
Finally, you mustered up the courage to just say it. “That I don’t have feelings for you. Because I do.”
Julien continued to look at you, the gears in her head racing a mile a minute.
You began to step away, ready to leave her standing in the kitchen when she grabbed your arm, pulled you close to her, and simply smiled before saying. “I feel the exact same way.”
“You do?”
“Mhm, I don’t want to keep it casual with you anymore. I want you, fully.” As Julien looked into your eyes now it almost seemed that her words conveyed that. Like she did see you fully see you truly.
And suddenly it was like you two were the only two in the whole world as you started to lean in towards her. The act was like muscle memory, your head tilted left, hers right. It was engraved into your brain. The only difference was that this time you were not blocked off by my tinted car windows, or a hotel door. The only thing that separated you from the outside world was a wall with a fairly large door cut out in it.
As your lips connected it felt different this time, the experience no longer felt foreign, it felt like home. Her lips were warm and velvety, and even though you had tasted them a thousand times, this kiss was different in a million ways. It was filled with vigor, passion, and a newfound sense of hope- like this was something that would stick, not something that would simply fade away.
Until you remembered the world was just a few steps away when a large gasp brought you to your senses. Julien and you turned around, face to face with Phoebe and Jo, who held huge grins on their faces.
As yours and Julien’s cheeks flushed Phoebe giggled and joked “Told you I’d find out who you were thinking of (Y/N)!” She and Jo ran back into the dining room, no doubt telling the whole room what they had just seen.
You turned to Julien and signed, “You think we can make a run for it?”
Julien's hands rubbed up and down your arms, soothing you. She leaned in for a quick peck and replied, “Not a chance.”
Hii, love your writting! ❤️❤️ Can i request one where JB and reader are seen kissing at a party and fans freak out on social media and the next day they look at the posts together?

pairing : julien baker x fem!reader
synopsis : after a fun night out celebrating the boys’ new album, you and julien wake up to madness
cw : really nothing, just fluff and an accidental hard launch. some sexual innuendos, actress!reader because i said so, femme!reader, phoebe being a menace
you were a fairly well-known actress, julien was a fairly well-known singer. the two of you should have probably known to be more cautious if you didn't want your business showcased all over enews, but neither of you were thinking about that. the boys had just released their album 'the record' last night at midnight. it had done very well on the charts so far, and there was nowhere to go but up from there. you were insanely proud of the women you loved and all of you were celebrating their achievement.
muna had joined you and the boys at the bar you were at. the four of you all sprouted grins as you stood up to greet them. you pulled jo's girlfriend, kelli, in for a long hug.
"hi, baby," kelli said into the hug. you smiled brightly and kissed her cheek.
"thank you for coming, kells. i know it means the world to them that you're all here," you said sweetly as you pulled away.
"are you kidding me? jo wouldn't shut up about seeing them all week." you and kelli started to giggle loudly. jo and julien turned around in amusement at the sound.
"and what are you ladies laughing about?" jo asked sarcastically and raised one eyebrow. julien walked up to you and wrapped one arm around your waist securely, a giddy smile on her face. it made you practically beam to see her so happy.
"i was just telling kelli my elaborate plan to steal her away from you. you better watch out, jo," you winked at the curly-haired woman with a smug smile. jo fake gasped and pulled kelli away from you. the four of you all started to laugh loudly your antics.
"who's ready to party?!" phoebe suddenly yelled over the loud music. you all started hollering and made your way to the bar top. some ordered drinks, but you and julien opted for soda instead. she was sober and you had decided when you two got serious that you wouldn't drink around her. she insisted that it was fine and it didn't bother her in the slightest, but you stuck with your decision. you were sober in spirit for her.
as the drinks were downed, all of you made your way to the dance floor. you cheered in delight as a rihanna song came on, pulling julien to dance with you.
"babyyy," julien whined, "you know i can't dance."
"anyone can dance, jules. now c'mon, just follow my lead," you said and placed her hands on your hips. you guided her movements, instructing her to move her hips in sync with yours. you put your arms around her neck as your bodies got closer together.
julien leaned up and burrowed her head in the crook of your neck, sucking marks onto the delicate skin. you giggled softly at her actions, moving your torso right up against hers. at that point, you two were practically grinding on each other. you could feel the outline of her abs through her button up shirt, and she was right at eye level with your cleavage that was probably spilling out of your top.
neither of you were thinking about anything other than each other, so you failed to see the woman that was recording you sitting at the bar.
after about ten minutes of dancing, you pulled julien's face away from your neck and told her you needed a drink. she, of course, followed you to the bar and ordered a cherry coke for you.
the bartender filled up the glass for you and slid it across the bar. you took a long sip from the straw as julien watched you. she took the drink from your hands and did the same. you sat down on a stool, and she moved to stand in between your legs. you placed the drink down and wrapped your arms around her neck, her pulling you by the waist to get you closer.
"have i told you how proud i am of you?" you asked her as you played with her hair. she let out a soft chuckle.
"have i told you how beautiful you are?" she countered with a smug smile. you laughed loudly and slapped her on the shoulder.
you leaned in to give her a sweet kiss. she immediately responded, kissing you back passionately and gliding her tongue along your bottom lip. you gave her access, letting her tongue into your mouth. you two made out for a few minutes before phoebe came into sight and wolf whistled loudly. you laughed and julien just flipped her off. that night was perfect.
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
the next morning, you and julien woke up to phoebe banging on the guest room door. the two of you and lucy decided to stay in the blonde’s apartment, which in hindsight was a bad idea. phoebe stayed up all hours of the night doing god knows what and woke the two of you up so early.
“phoebe! cut it out!” julien whined and rolled over, shoving her head under a pillow. the door practically busted open and phoebe came running in.
“guys, oh my god. you have to see this,” the older woman said and almost threw her phone at you.
you sighed and took her phone from her hands, the blonde bouncing on her feet anxiously. what could have made her so worked up? you didn’t know.
phoebe’s phone was opened to twitter. the tweets on her homepage were filled with videos and pictures of you and julien from last night. your eyes practically bulged out of your head as you scrolled.
“oh my god, julien, get up,” you said with a hardy laugh. the dirty blonde rolled over and glanced over your shoulder at the phone. her jaw was slack and she had a horrified look on her face. phoebe came and sat next to you on the bed as the three of you saw the leaked photos.
“this is…” julien trialed off and tilted her head.
“kinda funny…” you said monotonously before looking over at your lover and bursting out laughing. phoebe joined you in the giggles as julien looked at you guys like you grew three heads.
“guys! it’s not funny!” julien tried to reason, but she herself was starting to crack up.
“it’s funny. like, really funny,” you let out through your laughter. it sucked that someone had invaded your privacy, but the two of you were making out in the middle of a bar, so really it was your fault.
“it’s julien’s fault for practically fucking you in public,” phoebe shrugged.
“i was not!” julien exclaimed dramatically and hit phoebe with a pillow. the blonde fake gasped and hit her back. you were stuck in the middle of their childish fighting, trying to get out of the way of the flying objects.
“can you guys shut the fuck up! some of us would like to sleep!” lucy suddenly yelled from her bed down the hall.
“sorry, luce!” you yelled back.
“alright, get the fuck out, bridgers,” julien said and pointed a finger at the blonde.
“fine, baker,” she sassily responded before taking her phone and walking out of the door.
you and julien looked at each other as she shut the door, soft smiles on your faces. you hugged julien and gave her a kiss on the forehead, she cuddled into your chest.
“do you think we should tell people we’ve been together for two years?” julien asked jokingly as she looked up at you. it was surprising that you guys managed to keep your relationship a secret for so long.
“do you think we should tell people we’re engaged?” you joked back as you two fell into laughter again.
the rest of the morning was spent scrolling on social media to see people’s reactions. most were surprised and overjoyed, and some said they knew all along. which was obviously a sham because the two of you were ‘just friends’ to the public until now.
the tiktok edits made you blush and people’s shocked tweets made the two of you smile. after a while, you two decided to post an instagram story to your profile. the picture was the two of your hands laced together. julien’s unique tattoos made it obvious it was her, but the real surprise came from the diamond ring proudly placed on your ring finger. let’s just say twitter had another field day after that.
You knew Naomi since college. Met them before they had met Katie and Josette.
They had been your first friend in college, and since you were majoring in photography, and they were getting their band up and running, you both decided you could be their photographer/media manager.
When MUNA started gayotic, you had been behind the cameras laughing and watching them talk about the funniest topics or the most strangest things. Never on it.
Muna was playing a show in France which meant a long bus ride before the ferry and an impending deadline for a new ep
The three members were about to start the pod, you meddling about in the bus looking for a change of comfy clothes
“Hey, Naomi? Where did I leave my black spandex shorts?” You called from the small hallway
“Yeah, Naomi…where did she leave them?” Josette looked at her bestfriend, eyebrows wiggling
“In my bunk, babe.” Naomi shouted, “We started the pod already, btw.”
“Oh! I’m sorry, thank you, love you.”
You and Naomi started dating after MUNA’s first record came out. You guys had basically been a couple. Kissing and cuddling and sometimes sleeping with eachother ;) had to celebrate records releasing and deadlines being met somehow ;)) WINK WINK 😜
You put on black spandex, your leg tattoos all on display, above ankle white socks, doc marten boot shoes (idk how to describe them..basically their laces boots but ankle boots?) with a black crop top tank so your arm and sternum tattoos are on display (with hair in a half up half down claw clip with curtain bangs out…i wore this outfit today and i loved it LET ME HAVE THIS)
“Y/N, come and talk with us.” Katie shouted into the small doorway of the small room.
“Oh, okay” You walked in, Naomi’s cheeks reddening, smile forming at your look. At you.
“Gorgeous! Do a spin for us!” Josette shouted, her being your biggest hype man
“So, introduce yourself and what you do for us.”
“Uh…I’m MUNA’s photographer and media manager.” You smiled at the camera, this being a filmed ep.
“She’s being modest…she’s our bestfriend and the one and only Naomi’s girlfriend”
“Yes. That I am.” You smiled and look at your partner.
“Prettiest staff member we have. Might kiss her on the lips, among other things…” Naomi said, sliding their glasses down the bridge of their nose to look at you “seductively” while wiggling their eyebrows
Naomi basically has their hands all over you the whole time your on the pod
When Frankie and Gio join, you sit on their lap to make space, Naomi’s hands wrapped around you securely or hands on you hips
“You look so pretty, baby” They’d whisper in your ear when everyone was talking loudly over eachother
or “My pretty girl”
“Okay say bye and then say your name and then ‘I love you’” Katie said after her and Josette said bye
“Bye, thanks for having me, I love you Y/N”
“I love her too” Naomi said, leaning over and kissing your lips before they continued the outro
Getting up after the ep, you stood up infront of Naomi because you were still on their lap, they smacked your ass
“Ow!”
“Oh im sorry, it was just right there…any excuse to touch it” they smiled cheekily
“Haha, very funny” You grabbed the hat on their head, forcing them to stand up
Holding it away until they leaned in to kiss you, their hands holding your waist pulling you impossibly closer to their body
“I accept your apology”
“Oh, I didn’t know i needed to apologize for smacking my girlfriends ass” They stood infront of you, sass all over their face
“Okay, apology acceptance, revoked”
“Okay im sorry. I really am”
“Uh huh”
“Would a kiss better my chances?” they asked leaning in in
“Nuh uh” You rolled your eyes
“Apology sex?”
“There you go, baby. Your getting it now.” You smiled and walked away, blush rising on Naomi’s cheeks once again

Hii could you write naomi mcpherson x younger reader going to mungenius christmas party? Appreciate you!
THE PARTY’S ON, THE FEELING’S HERE (Christmas special)
(Naomi McPherson x reader)
TW: mention of smoking, use of y/n, JBLU is a thing in this (idk if that bothers people)
SUMMARY: your partner takes you to a Christmas party :)
AUTHOR’S NOTE: these stories will be sporadic. I have no game plan.
------------------------------------------------
In the car, your hands were a bit shaky, but not from the raging cold. Getting together with your partner’s friends was intimidating, especially since you were a bit younger than all of them.
“You alright over there?” Naomi asked from the driver's seat. “You’ve been quiet.”
“I’m okay.” You nodded. Your voice broke.
“Don’t be nervous, baby.” Naomi said softly. They could always tell how you were feeling.
“I know I shouldn’t be.” You sighed. “It’s just…”
“I get it.” They squeezed your thigh. “We’re all older than you, and we’re all cool Los Angeles musicians. It’s definitely a little scary.”
You nodded, feeling understood. “Just…don’t leave me alone for too long, yeah?”
“Of course.” They smiled.
When you got to Katie Gavin’s home, you could see friends already inside, and the driveway was full of cars. You panicked a little.
“Are we late?” You gasped.
“Uhh…no.” Naomi checked the time. “Everyone else is early. Katie said to be here around this time.”
“Naomi, we are late!” You groaned, sinking into your seat. “Everyone’s here and we’re just arriving!”
“Babe.” Naomi said firmly, making you look at them. “It’s alright. Being late isn’t gonna mean anything to them. I’m actually surprised Jo and Kelli are here on time. Jo is constantly late. We’re not even late!”
You sighed, pushing your hair out of your face. “Jo is…always late, huh?”
“It’s the ADHD.” They shrugged.
You laughed a little, shaking your head.
“You’ve met them before, honey,” Naomi reassured you. “Multiple times. Katie, Kelli, and Jo love you. You’re like an additional member of the band at this point. And the boys adore you too. They think you’re cute…which you are.”
You blushed a bit, but covered it by wiping a bead of sweat from your forehead. “Alright, alright.”
“So you wanna head in?” They asked. “We will be late if we don’t.”
You quickly pulled yourself together, forcing your nerves away. Naomi’s comforting words had helped. Plus, if you were really that shy around everyone, you could always get Jo caught up in a good conversation.
Naomi held your hand tightly, the metal of their rings cooling your sweaty palm, as you went inside. You were met with a chorus of greetings. Everyone was sitting in the living room. Katie and Phoebe Bridgers were on the floor by the coffee table, Kelli Caton, Jo’s girlfriend, was in a nearby chair, Josette Maskin on the arm of the chair, and Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker were on the couch, taking up minimal space with JB sitting on Lucy’s lap. They were all in sweaters and jeans, apparently deciding that’s the gay Christmas look.
Naomi steered you to the other end on the couch, where they leaned on the arm, just like Jo. There was a quick round of “How are you” and then their earlier conversation continued. They filled you in, of course. The discussion was simply about what Christmas was like growing up.
“Guys, I’m Jewish!!!” Jo exclaimed.
“Then tell us about Hanukkah.” Kelli told her while the others laughed.
“Well…”
So Jo began telling you about that, which gave you time to relax. Naomi gently rubbed the back of your neck while Jo spoke, silently reassuring you that they were right there.
Once Jo’s rant was finished, they turned to you for your input. For a moment, you internally panicked, but you managed to talk a bit about your Christmas experience. Once you brought up how the concept of Santa Claus is creepy, everyone agreed eagerly, pulling you out of your shell.
Eventually, Katie announced it was dinner time, and the chatter moved to her dining room. Each person had brought a little something, creating a nice meal. Holiday music played in the background. The atmosphere was safe and cozy. It was hard to be shy at that point. They were all so kind, and they genuinely enjoyed hanging out with you.
At the table, Jo insisted that they say a prayer, so you held Naomi and Lucy’s hands as Jo thanked whoever for the food and for being gay and sexy.
Naomi kept a grip on your thigh under the table, only stopping when they needed to eat something with two hands. It was reassuring, though you didn’t need their comfort anymore. You engaged in a quiet discussion with Lucy, while the other talked about L.A. and what not. Lucy carried around a small camera all night, taking funny photos, along with beautiful ones.
Once the food was done, you and Naomi took the dirty plates into the kitchen, which gave you a moment alone.
“Hey,” Naomi pulled you to their chest, smiling softly. “How are you holding up? It seems like you’re doing good.”
“I am.” You smiled. “Everyone’s so nice. I like being with them.”
“I knew you would.” They chuckled. “Social anxiety, hm?”
“Yeah.” You laughed.
The group gathered in the living room once more, still chatty. The talk was lively and fun, not depressing, like you’d assume six indie musicians and their partners' conversation would be.
You helped Katie with dessert, Jo tagging along as well, when it was time.
“Don’t worry, I’m not making y’all decorate the cookies,” Katie explained. “I did that earlier. I don’t trust Jo with frosting.”
Jo grumbled, shaking her head, making you smile.
“I did…burn the cookies just a little.” Katie admitted. “But…they taste fine. They’re a little crisp if anything. I taste tested one or two.”
“Let us be the judges of this.” Jo said, picking up a cookie. She bit into it, and chewed thoughtfully, before declaring they were fine. She offered you the treat, so you took a bite from the opposite side. It definitely tasted…a little burnt. But the taste of the frosting covered it up.
“I mean,” You said. “It’s not like it’s black or something.”
“Thank you for the positivity.” Katie laughed.
“At least it’s not undercooked.” You shrugged. “No salmonella this Christmas.”
Things died down eventually, once the cookies were eaten, so people separated momentarily. Naomi and Julien slipped outside for a smoke break, Katie and Kelli went to start cleaning the dishes, Jo started cracking jokes, per usual, to Lucy, and you quickly went to the bathroom.
In the mirror, you stared at your reflection for a minute, and found color in your cheeks, and a content look in your eyes. All side effects of good friends. Connection was a bit scary to you. It
took a lot for Naomi to lure you to them. Being able to find kindness in the group made you happy. It was almost like a Christmas gift.
