Once when I was in grade school, we had to do a project that involved soap carving, and it had to be Egyptian themed because we were learning about Ancient Egypt.

I remember taking the DIAL soap and painstakingly carving out who I thought was Mother Goddess Isis (though looking back it was probably Ma’at, because...feather on her head) with a backdrop of nonsense hieroglyphics with a sewing needle, a pointed nail file, plastic knife and a toothpick (because heck my parents weren't home and I wasn’t allowed real knives).  I wanted it to look like a stone tablet, and it did.  It looked awesome, even the feather was awesome.

The day the project was due, a majority of the class came in with pyramids and obelisks. Like actually carved it out, and here I was with my Dial soap with ‘etchings’.  I felt really bad because I didn’t do the project the “right” way.

I don’t remember what grade I got, I just remember someone telling me “you were supposed to carve not draw.” and I vaguely remember asking “Did your dad help you?” (BITTER, haha), and trying to re-do the project, but my teacher said I didn’t have to.

We had a classroom ‘artifact exhibit’ with all our soup carvings and our explanation of what it was.

ANYWHO.....

I have this really big urge to try soap carving again, but actually carving and not etching.... like I did last time.  I’ve always wanted to learn to whittle, maybe soap is a good way to start.  What tools do I need? I don’t think my pocket knife is a good idea because...soap, is a lubricant and pocket knives need to...flip--that’s not safe.

Ah...but what would I do with all the shavings? I’m pretty sure my housemates would not appreciate soap in the possessed microwave.
