Could you give an introduction for each of the cats?
Sure!
This is Aria! She's a female calico and is about 3 or 4 years old, my youngest baby!
This is Nomie! He is our big, orange, sweetheart and is about 4 or 5 years old!
This is Mr. Edger Fullen Whiskers or Edger for short! He's my oldest baby of 6 years old and the grey spotted/stripped cat!
And of course our special guests Mary and Annie! My precious little nieces!
years of lurking the internet has aloud me to bring you this
Hello! My elderly cat just recently passed away, and my younger cat is now acting out and peeing on the walls and such. I think it’s because she doesn’t like change and she’s bored without someone to hang out with when we’re gone, do you have any advice on what I can do to make things easier for her? I bought some enrichment stuff online and I’m hoping she likes it so she can have some stimulation during the day.
Hey, I’m so sorry about your kitty! :(Â
It always sucks to lose a pet, and it sucks even more when you have other pets that are affected by the loss as well. I’ll list the suggestions/ideas I can think of that might help -
- make sure you’re using an enzymatic cleaner to clean up all of the pee spots, to help discourage her from going in the same spot simply because it smells like she should go there
- try adding more litter boxes, especially around where she’s peeing. If she’s feeling insecure and trying to make the area smell like her, that’ll give her a more acceptable spot to do that in
- likewise, scratching posts/cardboard scratchers placed around might help for areas to let her mark as hers so she feels more secure
- if you don’t already have one, look into Feliway plug ins. This can help reduce overall stress for your kitty, and might help her manage the situation a little more calmly
- extra enrichment is great! You could also try leaving the TV on for her, especially if you have a way to put youtube videos of catTV on (videos of birds, squirrels, etc. for cats to watch).
- I’m sure you already are, but try to spend more time with her when you’re home when you can as she works on making the transition - my partners recently had the same thing happen, and their younger cat was MUCH more clingy for ~2-3 weeks before calming down some. She just needed more snuggles and reassurance and attention while she coped with the change and realized that nothing else was going to happen.
- As usual, it never hurts to touch base with your vet, especially with the peeing out of litterbox issue. Cats can sometimes end up with urinary issues caused by stress, so it’s not a bad idea to have her checked out just to make sure nothing like that is popping up. If she’s really having a rough time adjusting to the loss, you could also ask your vet about anxiety medication for a few weeks or so, to help her through the worst of it.
Again, I’m sorry about losing your older kitty. ♥ Good luck, I hope your other cat will calm down & adjust soon! Give her an extra scritch or treat from me. ♥
