Thinking about this for a while now, but I just realized why I fell hard for Zuko and Katara as potential couples.
A bit of a stretch and not quite the same for a plethora of reasons; but when I thought about it, I love Zutara in the same way that I love Gajeel and Levy from Fairytail.
Now, I know that the two couples are vastly different in some ways, but there is a lot of them that are similar in some ways too. Spoilers ahead for FairyTail if you have not watched it
1) Both were enemies at one point to the female character.
Granted while Levy is not a lead, she is still a prominent part of FairyTail. But for those that don’t know, when Gajeel came into the scene with this anime, he was from an enemy guild that was at first there to cause trouble and bring it down. (Yes, I know that Gajeel was far worst than how Zuko was, but there is still the enemies side of it). And after the first fight, they get guided by an older person to try and become better from their downfall.
And we know how Zuko was during the North Pole and what happened after that.
2) Gajeel and Zuko had troubled past that make it hard for them to express themselves at first. Usually only scowling or overly yelling at anyone and everyone
For Gajeel, I know it was because of a lot of time jumping and what not and losing his dragon parent at a young age, but still.
(Again they are not the same but strangely similar)
3) Both are powerful in their own ways. Zuko being a strong fire bender in his own rights and discipline.
Gajeel being a freaking Metal Dragon Slayer and can eat freaking metal to get stronger. And can look like he means business.
Need i say more?
4) And they both want to change for the greater good. Zuko for his people (And maybe for Katara *wink wink*)
And Gajeel wanted to become stronger and better for Levy even if at first he was apathetic about it. To freaking him sacrificing himself to save her and is on the verge of death and imagined having a freaking family with her.
5) When not on the guise of being tough or harden, both are awkward people.
Zuko with his inability to pick up social cues sometimes and bad jokes. And Gajeel with his ... poetic but certainly rough, rough singing. (I cringe when I hear it sorry!)
6) They took a lightening shot for their respective gals! That one should speak for itself!
I feel like I could go on, but I wanted to hit the basics for these two.
Now for the ladies.
1) Katara and Levy are spunky girls. Levy more so than Katara, as Katara is more righteous (Almost to a fault) but both girls usually have cheery personalities that can be coupled with moments of badassery.
2) Both girls are compassionate toward those that they care about. Katara is stubborn when it comes to helping people and making sure they are okay.
And Levy is also stubborn when it comes to protecting the Fairytail guild, even if she is not the strongest.
3) Both are willing to give the enemy that hurt them a chance to change.
Now, I know I am going to get some criticisms with Levy because for her, there is a lot more than just forgiving Gajeel. As I mentioned before, he was an enemy guild memory that partook in... well, less than pleasant activities. When we first meet Gajeel, he sends a warning to FairyTail by beating up Levy and her team and publicly hung them up to show the guild they were next for this kind of brutality. And many thought it was not possible for Levy to every forgive Gajeel for what he had done.
But in the anime, it does show that Gajeel, under the head of the FairyTail guild, is taking steps to get better and at least make up for what he did. And by doing so, he takes a beating from guys in Levy’s group over what happened. Levy is not partaking in it, but she is there with them. Then, another guild member is about to hurt Levy because she spoke up to this guild member was being overly brutal toward Gajeel. In mere seconds, Gajeel took the attack while still exhausted himself.
And from then on, Levy worked to give Gajeel a chance and see his other sides.
Katara on the other hand, while she and Zuko are not on that level of giving her enemy a chance to change, she certainly was willing to give Zuko a chance while in the cave catacombs. And after the Southern Raiders, she is willing to forgive him and trusts him. (Almost immediately after that and all through out the finally if you ask me.)
4) Both girls can kick butt and can put their respective suitors in place.
(Levy more so than Katara as again, Gajeel and Levy have a bit more of a different dynamic. But I do get the feeling that Katara can certainly kick Zuko’s butt if she needed to)
5) The height difference. Again kinda different as Katara is not that much shorter, but I can’t help but notice at least when they hug that Zuko is certainly taller than her and when he hugs her, it is cute. (And this is more of an aesthetic observation rather than the only reason I like it)
Gajeel and Levy...
^ I think this one speaks for itself but I am a bit of a sucker for this kind of trope as well.
6) In at least fan art and comics that I have seen from fans taking their relationship and running the course (And for Gajeel and Levy, is completely cannon); both relationships have a dynamic of the other knowing what the other needs. Communicating and expressing their feelings about things, and giving the other the support that they need to grow.
Sure they started from rocky beginnings, but from that, they grow and become stronger as couples and are able to becomes unstoppable forces of their respective worlds.
I am sure there is more that I can go on about. But still, just a random thought about why I like either one of these relationship and realized that there was something more to talk about.
