Saw this chinese flag while watching Mulan. Anyone knows if this flag is actually historical and from where it is,or its just a design from the movie?

GENERAL. okay lots of things played into this decision and I need to break it down. 

FATHER. first and foremost, Shang is really in quite a state when he finds out that Ping, is actually Mulan, a woman. He storms away, hurt more than anything really, but I think the turning point for him emotionally is when Mulan looks up at him and just says ‘I did it to save my father’. Seeing as Shang just lost his father, he can see just how much he would LOVE not to have lost his father, and he’d have done just about anything to save his father too. It humanizes her, and rather than be hurt by her actions, it’s the first step to understanding. 

HERO. Shang sees Ping as someone who is a hero. He literally destroyed an entire army by doing something stupid, putting his life on the line, and thinking outside of Shang’s training. He certainly didn’t teach Ping that. So all at once he’s faced with a clash because here’s this hero of China, and guess what!! Ping is Mulan, a woman, and it goes against everything society taught him. But he can’t kill the Hero of China. He can’t.

SAVED. On a smaller scale as well, Ping risked his life to save Shang even after everything. Army is defeated, you don’t need to do anything else. But Ping saves him. So is he supposed to kill his saviour literally just because she’s a different gender? Another clash of morals and beliefs for him. But more importantly, Shang is changing in this moment –– even if on the outside he still seems harsh.
