Korean-American rapper Jay Park has apologised to Muslim fans for lyrics in his 2020 song “Mukkbang! - Remix” which contained the lines “Worship me like Allah / Get it done like wallah.” The song, which also refers to the rapper as “Jay Park, a young God” sparked controversy on Twitter when an online user called attention to its lyrics on May 27. The hip-hop star initially responded to growing criticism with a post saying “Y’all outta pocket for (making) ‘he draggin’ a religion’ or ‘racist’ comments. Stop with that bull**** false narrative. To me it’s just lyrics, to some it’s more serious. Simple as that.” Park’s first apology did not go down well with Muslim fans who accused the singer-songwriter of “gaslighting” and social media users continued to slam Park for being “disrespectful” and “Islamophobic”. Park’s initial response was deleted a day later and another one put up by the rapper, reiterating that “the intent was never to disrespect or offend” with a caption “I humbly apologize”. "At first I didn't see the problem but as I read the comments (not the hateful ones but the ones who are actually trying to educate on why it’s offensive) I see that I used a word some are willing to die behind in my lyrics," he wrote. "It's not my place to use something that means so much to the Muslim people in my rap lyrics freely."
