After school, I headed straight home, determined to convince my mom to let me go to the show.
Meeting Luke was surely something I wasn't going to forget anytime soon. I already couldn't wait to see him again that night.
I was supposed to ride my grandmother's ancient bike, but barely two meters into my first pedal, the damn bike fell apart.
I sighed and started walking, dragging the bike beside me.
Or at least that's what I thought I'd have to do.
But a few minutes later, an old red pickup truck pulled up beside me.
"Need a ride?" A smoky, teasing voice called from the driver's seat.
"I'm perfectly fine, thank you very much," I replied sarcastically
"You sure?" he asked, "I'd hate to leave the new, innocent girl all alone in this creepy ass town"
"Like anything interesting ever happens here," I snorted.
I kept walking on the sidewalk while the truck rolled beside me at the same pace.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I finally looked over.
I was surprised to find it was a guy about my age behind the wheel.
Guess anyone can drive a truck nowadays, I thought.
The first thing I noticed about him was his pale forest-green eyes. One of them was half-hidden beneath his overgrown fringe, while messy bleached blonde hair streaked with chunky black highlights framed his fair face.
"Come on," he insisted, opening the passenger seat door. "Worst-case scenario, I'm a psycho, and I murder you."
I stood there, staring at him.
"Just kidding," he added quickly. "Besides, you could be the serial killer ."
"But I'm not trying to get you into my vehicle"
He glanced at my broken bike and smirked.
"I'm pretty sure I wouldn't fit on that thing."
I suppressed a laugh and rolled my eyes.
Maybe I should get in his truck. If I kept walking, I'd never make it home on time.
I knew I probably shouldn't get into a stranger's truck.
But this was Castlewood. Everyone knew everyone here. And if he really was a murderer, someone would've noticed by now.
After a period of debating my options, I finally ceded.
"If I let you drive me home, will you finally shut up?"
"I wouldn't count on it." He replied with a teasing smirk.
I sighed and said, defeated, âFine.â
"Smart choice," he said as I climbed into the passenger seat.
"I live at 11 Willow Lane."
He glanced at me with an amused smile.
"You shouldn't tell strangers your address"
"How else would you know where I live?"
He paused for a second.
"Huh, I didn't think about that. Let's go then," He chuckled and started the truck.
"I should at least know the name of my murderer, right?"
"I won't kill you. And my name's Michael, by the way"
"Kay, Michael. Take me home."
He turned on the radio, and the Sex Pistols filled the truck.
As he drove me home, I finally had the chance to get a better look at him.
He had a piercing in his left eyebrow that stood out against his ivory skin, and his cheeks were slightly flushed.
He wore a faded graphic T-shirt beneath a worn black jacket, its sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing a pair of black armband tattoos.
Definitely had the whole punk-rock thing going on.
I couldn't help but admire the tattoos.
"So⌠got any plans for tonight?"
"Yeah. I'm going to some stupid show or whatever."
"You really don't have high hopes for this town, do you?"
"Not really."
"Maybe I'll see you there."
I looked over at him.
"Oh, you're going?"
He shrugged, keeping his eyes on the road.
"There's not much else to do around here."
"Right"
"Don't worry," he said, giving me a furtive glance. "If the band sucks, at least the beer's good"
I frowned.
"I don't drink, but thanks, I guess."
I looked at him, genuinely confused.
"Aren't they like super conservative and strict here?" I asked.
"Only if they catch you."
He said, the corner of his mouth curled into a crooked smile.
After about five minutes of comfortable silence, we pulled up in front of my grandmother's house.
"Here we are."
I reached for the door handle, but before I climbed out, I looked back at him one last time.
"Thanks for the ride, Michael."
"AnytimeâŚ" He tilted his head slightly, waiting.
It took me a second to catch what he meant.
"Y/N." I said with a wavering smile and jumped out of the truck.
"See you around, Y/N."
He said, started the engine again, and waved at me through the window before disappearing down Willow Lane.

I waited until my mom fell asleep before slipping into my fishnet tights, a black denim skirt, a black-and-gray-striped sweater, and my high-top black Converse.
After smudging on some thick black eyeliner, I perched on my windowsill.
I had to sneak out. There was no way my mom would let me go to a bar just to see the band of a guy I'd just met that day.
âAren't you happy that I've made friends already?â I asked her earlier, unable to hide the resentment in my voice.
"Who even knows who that little nobody is?"
âDoesn't matter. What could even happen to me in a place like this anyway?â
"We never know what's out there, Y/N. You need to be careful"
"Sure, Mom," I said reluctantly and rolled my eyes.
After dinner, I went straight to my room to look for my fake ID. Back home, pretty much everyone had one, and I was no exception.
I somehow managed to get to The Raven before Luke's band started playing by asking directions from some strangers.
I ordered a cherry cola at the bar and found a seat near the stage.
In just a couple of minutes, Luke's band was coming up to the stage. If you could call it that, it was hardly an old wooden platform; certainly, it had seen better days.
Under the blue lights, he appeared; the band's lead singer wearing a plain red shirt beneath a leather jacket, ripped skinny jeans, and black boots.
I couldn't help but notice the black eyeliner framing his already light blue eyes.
The stage lights made him look even more handsomeâif that was possible- making his skin glow, almost translucent.
His bandmates followed him.
To his right was a tanned guy with skunk hair playing bass. In the background, a brunette guy with a red bandana on his forehead was playing the drums.
And to Luke's left was the second guitaristâŚ
Wait... was thatâ? No way.
That was Michael, the guy with the pick-up.
The now red lights caught in his hair made him look almost like an angel.
He was now wearing a long-sleeve raglan shirt with "IDIOT!" scrawled across the front with black Sharpie. As well as skinny jeans and combat boots.
I was amazed to see them together on stage.
I had already put them in very distant places in my mind.
But in a small town like this one, it made sense that the two coolest guys were friends.
"Good evening, Castlewood!" Luke called through the microphone.
The crowd erupted into cheers.
There couldn't have been more than 40 people packed inside the bar; probably every teenager in town.
They obviously knew them.
Well, they were definitely hard to forget.
Luke introduced the band: Calum, the bassist; Ashton, the drummer; and, of course, Michael.
After some cheers and applause for each of the members, Ashton counted them in.
They opened with "What I Like About You."
From the first chord, they had me hooked.
I really didn't expect anything from a tiny town like Castlewood.
But⌠they were, actually, pretty good.
Luke was impossible to ignore.
He took the stage completely, glancing around, pointing the microphone toward the audience whenever they sang along.
But by their second song it was impossible not to notice the way he was avoiding one side of the stageâŚ
He came over several times to sing with Calum into the same microphone and even turned around to sing with Ashton. He approached the audience from every possible angle, but he never stepped more than a meter and a half away from Michael.
It seemed really strange to me, but I didn't have time to think much about it because at that moment I locked eyes with Luke.
He seemed surprised for a split second when he saw me there, but then he grinned, pleased, as if he already knew I was going to show up.
I instantly blushed and giggled like an idiot.
He pointed at me and screamed into the microphone:
"This one is for the new girl, Y/N!"
Everyone turned to look at me, clapping and cheering.
Great.
As if being the new girl wasn't enough.
Now everyone knew my name.
I looked over at Michael, searching for sympathy.
But instead of finding him laughing like everyone else, he just rolled his eyes.
InterestingâŚ
The opening chords of "She Looks So Perfect" echoed through the bar.
I flushed even harder; I thanked the lights for hiding it.
Luke caught my eye again.
A satisfied grin spread across his face before he winked at me and launched into the first verse.
When he turned around, I could briefly see the sharp white fangâperhaps a little too long to be normal...
But his quick movements made it hard for me to really focusâmaybe I was staring at his mouth way too much...
The crowd at the bar knew the lyrics by heart, and I found myself singing along to the second chorusâI had to admit it was ridiculously catchy.
Every now and then, my eyes wandered to Michael.
At one point, I noticed that his gaze lingered on Luke for a second longer than usual, with an almost piercing look in his eyes.
After a few songs, he said to the crowd, sweating and almost out of breath, "Thank you, Castlewood! You were amazing, as always!"
The crowd burst into cries and cheers.
"We are 5 Seconds of Summer!"
The applause grew even louder as the band stepped away from their microphones.
Once the set was over, the guys disappeared backstage.
A few minutes later, they came back out.
Luke was immediately swarmed by people.
He greeted some fans, hugged his friends, and laughed and joked around.
I couldn't help but stare at him from the bar; I was so absorbed in him that I didn't notice when someone came up to me.
"So..." A gentle voice behind me made me turn.
"What do you think?"
Michael.
I almost jumped from the seat.
"Gosh, you scared the hell out of me"
A guilty smile crossed his face.
"Sorry."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I didn't mean to."
"It's okay."
I laughed, motioning to the empty stool beside me.
"It was good, it was really good"
He looked at me with satisfaction, tilting his head slightly.
âBut I'm mad at you because you didn't tell me you were in the band!â
I said, playfully tapping him on the shoulder.
"Well, you never asked."
We laughed for an instant, but before I could think about what I was doing,
a whisper echoed in my earâ
a deep, husky voice that made the music fade away.
"Did I make a good impression?"
I turned around immediately; I knew exactly who it was.
For some strange reason, I didnât feel as scared with him.
âHi!â I said cheerfully.
"Sure you did! That was awesome!"
"I'm glad you liked it, pretty girl," he said with a smirk.
Until then, he hadn't paid any attention to the boy sitting next to me.
âMichael,â he said, sounding way more serious.
âLuke,â he replied in the same tone.
The smile Michael had been wearing the whole time we'd been talking suddenly faded, and I wondered if it had ever really been there to begin with.
âDo you two know each other?â Luke asked, holding my shoulders from behind, possessively.
"Sure thing, I drove her home earlier this evening," Michael said with a teasing look.
âDid you?â Luke asked, gripping me tighter in his hands; even though I couldn't see his face, I was sure he was grimacing.
âYeah, how did you two meet?â Michael asked back, tilting his head, feigning curiosity.
âWe skipped class together,â Luke said with a note of satisfaction in his voice.
"Always being the role model, aren't you, Luke?âMichael said, taking a sip of his beer.
"You know me, Mikeâalways making a statement. "
Luke replied and grabbed Michael's beer the moment it landed on the counter.
I was stunned, unsure how to react to this little argument between the only two people I'd met during my entire stay at Castlewood.
I tried to remove the black nail polish from my nails to take my thoughts away from them.
I was getting a little tired of their back-and-forth when Luke finally whispered in my ear
âWanna get out of here?â
âSure,â I said, grateful for an excuse to get out of there, though I had no real control over my body.
Michael started to get up.
"Lukeâ"
Luke looked back over his shoulder.
Their eyes met.
Whatever passed between them was enough to make Michael stop.
He clenched his jaw, then slowly lowered himself back into his seat.
âIt was good to see you, Mike,â I said before intuitively following Luke out of The Raven.
He clenched his jaw and took a sip of his beer before smiling sadly, defeated.
I followed Luke outside almost instinctively; a few curious glances were fixed on us, and people were whispering things I couldn't quite understand.
The excitement of being alone with him was rising inside meâI shouldnât be feeling this way about a guy Iâd barely met.
We walked in silence for a couple of meters, Luke guiding me with a hand on my lower back.
I felt comfortable with him, almost numb.
In a matter of seconds, we reached a dark alley next to the bar.
I kept replaying the conversation weâd had at the bar in my mindâthe way Michaelâs smile faded the moment Luke arrived, and the way Michael looked at me as we left the bar.
I could see the disappointment in his eyes, but it was as if he knew there was nothing he could do.
I barely noticed when we stopped and Luke led me toward one of the walls.
He grabbed me by the waist and gently pressed me against the wall.
âDid you like the show?â he whispered in my ear, gently caressing my hair.
âYeah,â I mumbled, unable to breathe properly.
His audacity didnât surprise me; I could almost have expected it, though I didnât know why.
I could barely see anything; all I could see were Luke's curls and a brick wall in front of me.
âI really hoped you did,â he said, moving even closer to me, his lips brushing my ear.
I was blushing like crazy, my legs were shaking, and all I could do was grab hold of Lukeâs leather jacket.
âWe hardly ever get new blood in town. Canât let that go to waste.â
He whispered again as he traced the curvature of my neck with an extremely sharp fang.
His words gave me chills, but I laughed regardless.
It sent shivers down my spine that made me tremble beneath his muscular yet slender body.
I was completely overwhelmed beneath him.
His voice was soft and sweet, like liquor,
and his velvety, delicate, strangely cold hands held my waist firmly.
I felt a strange pressure on my chest, but I brushed it from my mind by shaking my head, letting myself get carried away by the moment.
I wasnât even thinking about anything; I could only feel his canines caressing my neck.
His fingers were colder than the night air.
I should've stepped away.
Instead, I leaned closer.
The music from inside the bar had faded into a dull hum.
Even the voices outside sounded distant.
The fog had rolled into the alley without me noticing.
It wrapped around our ankles like smoke.
I felt drunk even though I hadnât had a single drink.
My head was spinning.
I felt a unnatural pressure on my artery.
My smile fade.
Suddenly I could feel everythingâthe coldness of his hands, almost metallic.
A warm liquid trickled beneath my collar.
Then I smelled it.
Blood.
My blood.
I instinctively reached for my neck.
My fingertips came away stained red.
My heart skipped.
It was like waking up from a trance.
I could feel his lips pressed against my neck, his firm hands on me.
I could feel the life draining from my body
Although I didn't scream or moveâI couldn't have, even if I'd wanted toâ
I felt more awake than ever.
Luke slowly lifted his head.
Moonlight caught on two impossibly long fangs.
A crimson drop rolled from the tip of one of them.
He smiled.
He was still wearing the same smile I'd seen on stage.
He wasn't who I'd thought he was.
But in some strange way, it didn't surprise me.
I had been waiting for him to suck my blood all night long.
Somewhere far away from the mouth of the alley,
I heard a worried voice calling my sucker.
"Luke."
