THE SOVIET INVASION OF AFGHANISTAN
In late December 1979, the Soviet army swept into Afghanistan and within a week were in full control of the country, where they would remain for the next 10 years.
Moscow defined the mission as an “intervention,” not an invasion, designed to restore the pro-Soviet Communist regime, which had been overthrown by Islamic militants earlier that year. The invasion was an application of the Brezhnev Doctrine, which held that once converted to Communism, a nation could not be allowed to revert to its previous, or any other, political system.
The Soviets retreated from Afghanistan in 1989, after losing a war of attrition to the radical Mujahideen, who, throughout the 1980s were armed and trained by the U.S. military.
